Tlie deceased was a member ol the well known Jackson lamily ol Christchurch road, and was well known throughout the district for many years, being proprietor of the Tfiish Inn Hotel at Jacksons, lie came to Hokitika with lii.s wife a few months ago to reside. Deceased was (it years of age. and leaves a widow and one son. Mr 11. Jackson, of Aickens. The news ol his sudden death caused a painful shock to the community.

Ncwdick. the driver of First Carbine. for alleged 'indue use of the whip. Ncwdick had been lined A copy ol the evidence taken , at the inquiry was received. In this, Ncwdick said that First Carbine was very la.yv and would not do his best without tlie whip. The horse was very thick-skinned and marked very easily. Mr 11. AY. Kitchingham moved that the tine should he increased to Lo as an indication to riders anil drivers that the practice.of excessive use of the whip was strongly disapproved by tlie association : also that the clubs he circularised on tlie matter. Mr \V. 11. Denton said lie strongly disapproved of the excessive use of the whip. lie thought that for a second otfemv a man should be disqualified. M.r J. 11. Toohey, the wellknown cycle dealer of Bcvell St. Air Blarney, managing director of the B.S.A. Company, who this week visited here advised Air E- C. Toohey of the appointment, which entitles him to tlio agency for this district for B.f>.A. motor cycles and TI.S.A. bicycles, of which a complete stock of all new models will lie arriving next month.— Advt.
At a meeting of (he (trey Jubilee Committee last evening, the Chairman said that the Executive had already k discussed the financial position, and there were only a few accounts to come in. The Secretary stated he could hare (lie balance sheet ready for a meeting early next week. They were going to he faced with something of a loss, judging by the accounts as at present, as the result of some unforeseen items of expenditure. Naturally they could not: anticipate every contingency, and he instanced the case of the Maori party which came for the Jubilee. They had only counted on a party of twelve, whereas between forty and fifty had turned up. and this item of expenditure alone amounted to €l5O. Excluding this, the finance committee’ calculations would have been absolutely accurate. hut such an exceptional item upset: their estimates, while there was some other expenditure, that had not been anticipated. He thought the debit balance would be somewhere in the neighbourhood ot €100; that was assuming that they had to pay €l5O for the Maori party’s expenses.
