A lire at Kokiri destroyed the residence of Airs T. Brooks, about I l o’clock on Thursday night, the cause of the outbreak being unknown. The building was insured for €2OO, and the furniture for a similar amount, all in tlie Yorkshire Office.
The Westport “Times’’ of 'Thursday stated:—Tile bush fires at Tvarameu, are now abating Rain began to fall last (Wednesday) night and it is still raining. The whole district is still covered with a thick blanket of smoke. Serious damage was done to Watson’s flax swamp, some hundreds of acres of flax being destroyed. A good deal of busiiland also was destroyed. The danger of further fires is passed for the time being. No buildings were destroyed.
The Reefton “Times’’ states: —i he bush fires at Rosstown on Wednesday evening assumed large proportions and about five o'clock the cottage owned by Mr Les Harris was threatened. Scrgt. Fryer and a party of men proceeded to the scene, and the furniture uas removed from the building and counter-lires were set to bum the scrub nearest to the- building. When this was done, all danger was removed. The hush tire, however, continued and extended all over the hills to the south of the town of Reefton.
Next Saturday there will be a gala day on Cass Square in aid of the Hokitika Beautifying Society. The occasion is to help with the improvement of the town reserves and the ocean beach, and as far as funds permit a comprehensive scheme will ho carried out. Committees of ladies are helping in various ways, and the Municipal Band will parade. A feature of the afternoon will be the balloon racing. Some monster balloons are to ho sent up and are sure to excite great interest. Next Friday night there will l>e a popular dance in the Soldiers’ Hall, where Ross’ Orchestra will provide music. Supper will be served, and everything done to make the ’evening a very pleasant one.

At that time when a circus was on at Dunedin, Mr Mewhinncv accepted a challenge and entered the cage ol a roaring lion, for which he received a gold medal.
The death took place at an early hour this morning at Westland Hospital of Mrs Eggeling, wife of Mr Fred Eggeling, the well-known blacksmith, now of Gladstone, near Paron. The deceased had been in ill-health for a considerable time past, and some weeks ami had a fall and dislocated her thigh, being brought to Hokitika Hospital for treatment. Her condition for some time past had been known to be very serious. A native of Germany, deceased came to New Zealand when 1-1 years of age, and most of her long residence in New Zealand hud been spent in Hokitika, for a long pfcrioxlof years residing in Bealcy St., some time ago removing to Gladstone Siding with her husband. She leaves a husband and family of two daughters (.Mrs J. J. Williams, of Hampden St. and Mrs .1. Smith, of Cobdcn). General sympathy will l>e extended to the bereaved husband and family in their loss.
