Tbe tramp steamer Higligate from Los Angeles, was berthed this morning to commence discharge of the largest cargo of bitumen ever dispatched in a single ship from me Port ol Jiiis Angeles. Tbe 2,200 tons of bitumen, which constitute a greater portion of the Tligbgate’s cargo, not only secures a tonnage record, but a portion of it is also tbe largest deck cargo that has ever been carried from the American port. The bitumen, which is consigned to the Wellington City Council, appears to be in excellent condition, all the visible • barrels on deck being intact, despite Hie fact that the vessel experienced licit weather across the Pacific and during the last few days ol the voyage strong southerly gales.
