(By Telegraph—Per Press Association. BITUAI’KN SHIPMENT. WELLINGTON. Feb. 28. Tbe tramp steamer Higligate from Los Angeles, was berthed this morning to commence discharge of the largest cargo of bitumen ever dispatched in a single ship from me Port ol Jiiis Angeles. Tbe 2,200 tons of bitumen, which constitute a greater portion of the Tligbgate’s cargo, not only secures a tonnage record, but a portion of it is also tbe largest deck cargo that has ever been carried from the American port. The bitumen, which is consigned to the Wellington City Council, appears to be in excellent condition, all the visible • barrels on deck being intact, despite Hie fact that the vessel experienced licit weather across the Pacific and during the last few days ol the voyage strong southerly gales. HON. AIR HAWKKN. TAURANGA. Feh. 29. Moil (). J. Hawken addressed a fair, audience at the Town llall last night, his speech being on general lines to that he delivered at Papatoctoe on Alondav night. He said in a country like New Zealand there should he lio unemployment and very especially the reason why secondary industries were not able to absorb the workers should he ascertained. He was hopeful than nil inquiry into the working of the Arhitratioi Act would find the reason. He explained the system of rural credits and emphasised the good work done by the Government in dealing with the housing problem, also in lieUpiug farmers in herd testing, the export of fruit and other direction. A hearty vote ol thanks tor the interesting address. To-day the -Minister attends shows and spends to-morrow visiting the district ami leaves on Friday morning for Rotorua. FIRES SUBSIDE. GISBORNE. .March 1. The tires ill Hicks Bay district, which reached within three miles of the township have subsided. The* settlers have returned to their homes. The estimate that 1000 sheep were destroyed has been confirmed. THE PREMIER ARRIVES. (III! IKTCH URCH. March 1.
