OBITUARY

MOTHER MARY MECHTILDES. There will he very general regret felt at the death of Mother Mary Mechtildes Boland, a pioneer Sister of Mercy on the West Coast, which occurred suddenly last evening at the Greymouth Convent, which the deceased nun founded fortysix years ago. She came to Hokitika in the year 1878. being a member of the original community of her Order who arrived that year. She came here to found the Convent in 1882, and tho subsequent growth and record of that establishment has been due in no small measure to her splendid work at tho outset. She was greatly esteemed by her sisters in religion, and there will he a host of her old pupils throughout Now Zealand grieved to hear of her death. Mother Mary Mechtildes was transferred to Christchurch in 1898, and had resided there ever since. She wns horn 82 years ago at Bnllyinackoy. Nenagli, County Tipperary. Ireland. She was on a visit to the \) cst Coast since last Thursday, on account of being the pioneer' sister of Mercy at Greymouth. At 5.45 yesterday she had a stroke of apoplexy and succumbed four hours later. The funeral will take place on Friday morning in Christchurch. 3MR JOHN SHANNAHAN. The death occurred at 9 o’clock last evening of Mr John Shnnnalian, at his residence, Thompson Street, Greymouth. The deceased, who had recently suffered an attack of rheumatic fever, was a native of Greenstone and was 47 years of age. He had for a number of years been an employee of the Dispatch Foundry, and previously bad been a mariner. He was the fourth son of the late Mr John Shan-n-alian, and leaves a. widow and two children, and also 0 two sisters (Mrs T. Kiely, Greymouth, Mrs King, Wellington) and four brothers, Dennis (Marsdon), Timothy (Auckland), Frank (Christchurch) anil Thomas (Ikamatun).
