THE C. A. LARSEN
1 SOUNDINGS WRONGLY CHARTED By Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright. INVERCARGILL, Feh. 28. The work on tho C. A. Larsen is progressing rapidly. Tho timber ordered is being shaped to cover the holes in her sides. The teinoprary plates will /he held on by timbers, and it is expected that with the aid of her pumps she can reach Port Chalmers, where arrangements have been made to dock her. It is expected she will l>e able to proceed north in about three weeks time. Another medium sized hole has been discovered on the port side, slightly forward of the meat deck, but it can easily be repaired. It is stated that the vessel has sunk another 18 inches in the sand forward. A sailor on hoard states that if it were not for the presence of mind of the Captain when the vessel ran ashore last- week, the hull would have been torn right out, and she would have, immediately sank as soon as she touched. Captain Nelson put the engines full speed astern, and she came off to starboard, swinging clear of the rocks as her head took the helm. It is understood that the Captain wished to lay out all night instead of coming up the inlet against tho slackening .water, but was advised by one of tho owners, who- as on hoard, to go straight up to the Base at Price’s Bay. No Marine Inquiry will be hold in New Zealand, hut there will lie a ]K>rftmetory affair, the principal enquiry being in Norway. Tho insurance companies are all Norwegian. Those on hoard tho Larsen state that since the disaster, the Star chascds have taken soundings all round the entrance of the inlet and up to where the vessel now lies, and have found that the depths as marked on the chart arc wrong, in some cases being as much as four fathoms out, the nearest to dorroot /being one marked fourteen fathoms on the chart, and which was found to ibo thirteen when sounded. The Sir James Clark Ross sailed for Norway via Panama this morning, and will call at New York where the greatest portion of her cargo will he discharged.
