(By Telegraph—P?r Press Association.) CHARGE DISMISSED. AUCKLAND. Feb. 27. A charge of negligent driving of a motor lorry thereby causing the death of an elderly Maori, Wetere Paki, on December 30, was preferred at the Police Court against Claude Francis Stevens and was dismissed by Mr Hunt, S.M., without calling on the defence. The Maori, who was very feeble was crossing at the junction of two streets when the lorry struck him .breaking one leg and lie died in the hospital. An eye witness said the .Maori hesitated when in front of the lorry. I li;K BRIGADES CONFERENCE. NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 27. The forty-ninth annual meeting of the Fire Brigades Association was opened this morning, Superintendent A. Garrett (Thames) presiding over 100 delegates from all parts of the Dominion. After the President’s opening address a civic reception Mas accorded the Conference by Mayor Griffiths, Mr Bellringer, M.P., and Mr Wyatt. Chairman of the Fire Board. The Conference then proceeded to business and after a brief discussion adopted the report and balance sheet. SUPREME COURT. AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. At the Supreme Court William Maddisan Alt, 40. a motor mechanic, who pleaded guilty to three charges of obtaining money by false pretences, was sentenced to two years reformative detention. The sum of £ISGS was involved and £7OO was ordered to be handed over. Joseph L. Lettica for breaking, entering and theft at Dargavill to one year reformative. Francis Halligan, 30, for money theft at Hamilton, to two years hard labour. At the Supreme Court Henry Osman, 45, a labourer, was sentenced to eight months imprisonment for bigamy. He married first in 1914 and contracted a bigamous marriage with a young girl last October. Judge Reed said: The girl you married last year was under age and apparently the sole reason you married her was to avoid imprisonment for carnal knowledge. James Raymond Slattery, 21, on sixteen charges of theft was sentenced to five years hard labour, accused having a bad record extending back to 1923. CONVERTING A CAR. AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. Robert Joseph Draper, aged 17 arrested late at night after a motor car he was driving bad careered into the safety zone and thence nearly on to the footpath just missing Mcllvenoy, Inspector of Police for Auckland dis trict, was charged at the Police Cour with converting a car to his own use negligently driving a car and cans ing injury to David Thompson who i now in the hospital. He was remand ed in custody to March sth, his conn sel saving Draper suffered from St Vitus Da nee bad. MAN FOUND DEAD. AUCKLAND. Feb. 27. The badly mutilated body of a mai not yet identified was found on tin railway line near Mount Eden stati'u this morning. The body was discolored by the guard of an outgoing train. It is not known how the fa tality happened. Deceased is agei lxdween 40 and 50. a dark man. cleai shaven and of medium build. A SCOTS ATHLETE. TO LIVE IN AUCKLAND. ALT KI..VND, Feb. 20. NEAV .PLYMOUTH, Feb. 27 The reduction of its subsidies to Fir Brigades by the Government was th subject of much discussion at the Con lorenee ol the U.F.B.A. to-day, whoi it was decided to approach the. Govern ment for more liberal treatment. Speakers told how thousands wortl of Government property had been saved, and in return it was thought tin State should assist the Association jr its Conference and demonstration travelling and remits covering these mat. tors were carried. Another remit recommended Educa--ion Boards to include in the school in riculum provision for fire drill in mblie and private schools. I'-NCHHE tournament. DUNEDIN Eeh. 27. Am. Thomas Rowlands was charged, it the Police Court this morning, with eeping a common gaming house. Accused was a promoter of euchre rives, held at the AVaratali Tea Ramis, and the prosecution was the e.sult of a visit of a detective in the apaeity of a patron on Saturday ight. On entering a conviction against defendant, the Magistrate said the matter was not one which called for a penalty.

CARS COLLIDE. AUCKLAND Feb. 27. A serious 'collision between two motor cars, occurred at a corner in Remuera this evening. The, cars involved were those of Dr V H. Mnrsack and Mi- P. T. Upton. Dr Mnrsack sustained severe head njuries, and was admitted in the hos>itnl. Two of Air Upton’s children, vho were in the car with their father, sustained! head injuries. One. child I ged 3|, is seriously iujuried. An opration was preformed, and her con-1 ition is serious.
