While Sydney folk are not sentimental, there was much heartburning when, amid most impressive ceremony, H.M.A.S. Australia was dragged out beyond the heads, and sunk in keeping with the Washington pact. It would have been even more pronounced if the Sydney, hearing one of the biggest honours of the naval warfare in the waters .surrounding Australia, had also been compelled to surrender to the sea, to which it lias been so faithful. Mr Bavin, the Premier, and other politicians eulogised his long political services to the State. WATCHMAN SHOT DEAD. MELBOURNE, Feb. 19. A night watchman named Patrick Fitzgerald was shot dead while engaged in his duties. It is believed that lie disturbed an intruder in the building.
