(From Our Own Correspondent). TI-lE COVERNOR-GENERAL On Friday morn in" last His Excellence the Governor-General paid an official visit to Ross His Excellency was accompanied by Lady Fergusson. Mrs Baird. Miss Dugdale and one staff officer. The party arrived at Ross about 10 a.in. and proceeded to the Council Chambers, here they were met by His Worship the Mayor (S. P. Evans Esq.) representative citizens and all the children of both schools. The assemblage rendered a verse of the National Anthem, the Mayor then on behalf of the citizens, in a brief speech, welcomed their Excellencies to this part of the district. He stated it was now some years since the previous ice-Re-sa] visit and the town fully appreciated this honour. AVm Clarke also proceeds to New Ply mouth, where he will he the recipient of the Association’s Gold Star, bavin; completed 25 years continuous servic< as a Brigadesmau. OBITUARY. Quite a gloom passed over the district on Sunday when it became known that the wife of Air Joseph Hansbury had passed away that morning at the Westland Hospital. Airs Hansbury was the only child of Air and ATr.= Peter Foletti of this town, very old and respected citizens. She was born at Ross about 30 years ago and spent all her life in the district, where she was always held in high esteem, being of a sincere and amiable disposition. The deceased's illness was of a brief duration, just one week elapsing since she was taken to Hokitika for medical treatment. The sympathy of the community is extended to the sorrowing parents and husband in their sudden bereavement. The funeral took place on Alonday afternoon at the Boss cemetery the Rev. Father O’Doherty officiating, first at St. Patrick’s Church and then at the graveside. ALVLEDTCTORY. On his departure to OCira, on transfer, on AYcdncsday 15th. February, the residents of Ross and the Railway staff in particular, lost a very popular family in Air ami Airs R. AYilkinson, of the N.Z. Railway Staff. Ross. Prior to their departure the staff gathered at the office of the stationmaster to bi<l farewell to them. In doing so Air C. R. Watson, tho stationmaster. covered the period of seven years that Afr Wilkingson bad been with them, and on behalf of the stall' wished him every success in his new position, and oh behalf of the residents of Ross, staffs of Hokitika and Ross and several other well-wishers of the district asked Air Wilkinson to accept a, Kaiapoi rug. All Donation ami Air Forrest, guard anil engine driver respectively, also spoke of the pleasant relations in the past. Air Wilkinson in replying thanked the staff and friends and trusted that they would continue in the happy relationship with his successor as they had been with himself. KTTCHEN EVENING On Friday evening at the home of Airs Claude AYatson a kitchen evening was tendered to Afiss E. Clicsterman. of Hokitika, who is to become the bride of Air K. 0. Alay. of Ross, during the coming month. Songs, music and supper extended the festivities until a late hour during which the happy bride to lie was the recipient of many varied and useful gifts. Quite a large number of ladies were present and a very pleasant evening spent. A SOCIAL. A social was tendered to Afr R. Chalmers on Friday night at the residence of Airs A. Upjohn. Afr Chalmers is leaving to take up educational studios at Canterbury College shortly, and his friends and well-wishers presented him with a writing companion as a token of esteem. A shaving outfit was also presented from the school children. Afr Chalmers has been the probationer at the Ross school for the past twelve months, MAGISTRATES COURT. ROSS. SATURDAY. FEB. 18th. (Before AY. Aleldrum. Esq.. S.AI.) Police v. Black.—Three charges foi breaches of “The Licensing Act”— keeping open for sale, selling, and exposing for sale. Sergt King appeared 1 fur the police. After hearing the evidence of Constable Power and the licensee of the L'tiy Motel, Ross .Airs Black), the Magistrate upheld the point raised bv Mr Alurdoeh who appeared for the defence that the charges had not been proved, ’f ile cases were dismissed. Police v. Ellen Theresa Kenning This was a charge against a defendant, a married woman, for being found on the premises of the Commercial Hotel. Ross, at a time when the hotel should lie closed. Sergt. King outlined the •use for the police and called Constable , Rower to support the charge. Mr Alurdoeh for the defence called Mrs Kenning and after hearing evidence the Magistrate dismissed the charge, holding that the defendant was the bona fide guest of Airs Carter, the wife of the licensee. Re F. J. Denia.—Afr Alurdoeh for the applicant applied far a remission of the sum of £lB due by the applicant under a maintenance order made for the support of the applicant’s brother. After hearing evidence and the production of a memorandum from the officer in charge of the Alaintenance Department. the total amount was remitted without variation of tlie order as to future payments. A. number of persons, all being first offenders, were charged with being on various hotel premises in Ross after hours and there being no appearance of any of the defendants, convictions were entered and the defendants ordered to pay costs. _________
