AUSTRALIA V. FRANCE. (Australian Press Association & Sun. SYDNEY, Fob. 16. The second series of tennis test matches between France and Australia commenced in extremely warm, humid weather. The Australians did not appear to the best advantage, except m the doubles match, the finish ol which was thrilling. The Australians had a narrow win, arousing intense excitement among a very large attendance. Brugnon defeated Pafterson I—o, 6—4, o—l. The Australian was brilliant in the first set, his services being severe and his all round piay great, but he fell away and Jien Brugnon smashed him repeatedly. Patterson was sluggish in the final set. his returns being particularly had. Borotra defeated ' Crawford 7—5. 6—l. In the first set the Australian* compelled the visitor to display uis agility. Crawford had a great chance of success when leading 6—5, hut failed to finalise it. In the second set Borotra chopped heavily Id Crawford's backhand, advanced to the net and dominated the game. In the doubles, Crawford and Hopman defeated Borotra and Bonsais 3 6, 7 10—8. Faulty smashing lost Australia the first set. Alter a good recovery, Crawford, who ' a.disappointing in the early stages, improved. Hcpman was stylish and shaped the best of the quartette. Borotra towards tho end made a brilliant attempt to save the game, hut the Australians kept the hall away from him throughout.
