AN ENEMY OF RAGWORT.
WELLINGTON. Feb. 10. The Cawthron Institute has conducted successfully tests with a moth named Tyria (for short) which attacks ragwort. Dr Tilyard says he can state positively the caterpillars do tremendous damage to this weed, and not to other plants of importance. He has asked the Research Council to apply for a permit to liberate the insect, and suggests three centres for the purpose. —King Country, Taranaki and Bay of Pleny. The Council’s committee asks for further tests which will be made. YOUNG MAN COAfAIITTKD FOR SENTENCE. WELLINGTON. February 8. John Charles Cannon, a clerk, aged twenty-two, pleaded guilty in the Alagistrate’s Court to charges of breaking and entering in the city, and taking from the Remington and Romeo Agency of New Zealand, goods to the total value of £220 ss. and also the premises of "William Burd, and stealing Jewellery of the total value of £302 17s 6d. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence,
In his statement, accused said! ho sold some of the jewellery to a young man named Claud Ellison (a clerk), who was about to be marirod. Ellison was to-da.v charged with rocieving jewellery, knowing it to be dishonestly obtained. He stated lie had piolced the jewellery up in the street. Ho pleaded not guilty to the charge and was committed to the Supreme Court fo rtrial, bail being allowed in £IOO.
