HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
.MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7tli., 1928,
The monthly mooting of the abovenamed Committee was held last night at 8.30 o’clock. Present—. Messrs AY. H. Shannon, F. Clarke, R. J. Redder. H. AV. R. Swoney, Jos. Conning (sec.), and AV. E. Richards. In the absence of the Chairman Air Richards was voted to the chair. Apologies were re reived for the absence of the Chairman (Rev. J. AV. Hayward) and Air Coni son.
Tho Caretaker reported on Severn requirements. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Clarke that application be made to the Board to have the Caretaker’s residence papered in three rooms, light installed in three rooms, and a califont put in. It was also resolved that first aid requirements be obtained for the school and that they be in the care ol the Rector. Also that an extension ladder be asked for and that lawn roller Ik obtained, if procurable at a reasonable price.
The Rector’s report showed that tin children are in good health and that the school opened on February Ist with a good attendance, that of the secondary department being the highest to! many years, requiring another assistant, for which application has been made. Also the staffing in the primary school is inadequate and further assistance has ben asked for there. In the public examinations four had passed the matriculation. Master Allan Shan non obtained a Junior National Scholarship for which he is to he congratulated.
The swimming sports take place on Wednesday. February 1 nth.—Received. The Committee considered the necessity of another teacher ill the secondary department and one in the primary as necessary ; that it was resolved to telegraph concerning them to-day. It was decided to obtain some soil lor the llower plot along the path. The tar-sealing carried out by the Borough stall' was a great improvement. The Committee expressed their pleasure at the result ol the public examinations. wherein the school obtained about HO per cent of passes, which was considerably above the average for the Dominion. A hearty vote ol thanks to the Rector and teaching stall’ was moved by Mr Shannon and supported by the members and carried, to be conveyed to the Rector by letter. The usual accounts were passed lor payment. Matters in connection with the forthcoming excursion to Oreymouth were finalised. The fares on that occasion will he school-child Is 3d. senior pupil Is 7d. and adult 2s Id. The meeting then terminated.
