The M arlborough Provincial War Memorial, a handsome tower*, containing it chiming clock surmounting a Chamber of Memories, in which are inscribed the names of 109 men who made the supreme sacrifice, was unveiled to-day by .Major-General Sir Andrew* llussell, and dedicated by the local clergy in tire presence of a record gathering from all parts of .Marlborough. The ceremony was most impressive. concluding with the sounding of the Last Post and the placing at the base of the memorial of the wreaths from local organisations and relatives of the fallen. PETROL DUTY. TAYMENT OF REFUND. WELLINGTON, Feb. (i. Owners of milking plants and motorlaunches will he reassured about refunds of tax paid on petrol hv information which has been received at the office of the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.
The .Motor Spirits Taxation Act, 1927. which imposed a duty of Id a gallon, throws upon tire consumer the onus of applying lor a refund of duty on motor spirit used otherwise than as fuel for* a liinlol* vehicle required to lie licensed under the Motor Vehicles Ad. 19*14.
Applications for refunds imw he made within 90 days of consumption to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, anil must be accompanied by such der la ration or other documentary evidence as he may rc(|irire. The penalty for* making a false claim or declaration is a fine of £SO oi* three months’ imprisonment.
The information now received is that a supply of forms will he available shortly at all post offices and that airplications, supported by receipts or other documents showing quantities of motor spirit purchased, must he delivered to the respective local motor* registration officers. Payments will he made at the end of March, .In lie, September, and December of each veal* in respect of the preceding quarterly periods. Duty so far cannot ho recovered unless application is made by March 3!>.t next. Up to Ihe present no regulations under the Ai l have liven gazetted anil no form of application has been prescribed. According to reports from the commercial world there has been a rise in price of hides, and within lln * next few months it is certain that a corresponding jump will take place in the price of footwear*. However, the manager of a local hoot shop thinks, that tiro increased value of the finished articles will not amount to more than 1(1 per cent. He states that the cause of lire “hump up’’ is a world-wide shortage of hides. It- is his candid opinion that this in turn is caused by the enthusiasm with which the dairying industry is being taken up. The modern farmer Inis no use fm* die slocX. RACEHORSE OWNER CHARGED. WANGANUI. Feb. .{. Hugh Al. Speed, the well-known owner ol" the racehorse Civility, came before Mr Barton, S.AI.. this morning for sentence on a charge of having used obscene language at I a.tn. last week to a constable on Taii]*> Quay. Defendant had had “a night out,” and with another* man he had motored to the Quay lor more liquor*. Tho constc.bh* called his attention to the fact that the ear’s engine had been left running, and asked who was in charge of the car. Speed ihen used filthy language. The magistrate fold Speed that lie had gone dangerously near to being dealt with in connection with the motor ear. On the charge of having used obscene language he would be ordered to come up for sentence within a year. If In* failed to he of good behaviour he could expect imprisonment, without the option of a line. Ml! COATES TO VISIT OTAGO. DUNEDIN, Felt. I. Replying to demands of the Otago Expansion League that he should make an early visit to Otago to enquire into irrigation problems, Mr Coates wired: ** I am doing my host to expedite m.v visit to Otago, but for various reasons I am unable yet to make definite arrangements.”
