[t is reported that tile nightingales that were brought out from England by Mr. A. Wilson on tlie- last trip of the Aorangi and were liberated in Auckland on Christmas Day have been heard singing in the hush at Tninaki. This, il true, is very interesting news, as it. is said that when these sweetthroated birds sing it is a sign that they are nesting. All those in England who listen-iu with constancy were thrilled last June at catching the song of a nightingale. It seems that an enterprising agent of the British Broadcasting Company had learned of a particular tree favoured by a feathered songstress, and with great adroitness managed to fix a microphone near the leafy platform without giving any alarm. The result was an almost perfect reproduction of the bird’s nocturnal chant. Since then gramophone records of nightingale’s song have been made, but bow that result lias been achieved is not related though it is possible that it may have lieen relayed from the same microphone that served the radio station so well to the recording room in the gramophone room.
