SHEFFIELD SHIELD. SYDNEY. Jan. 29. 1„ the Sheffield Shield match. Victoria made 422 in the first innings (Woodfull 94, Hendry 13S. Ryder 100. Scarfe not out 3-3). Bowling: Gregory took 4 for 41, i(tholls 2 for 103. Hailey, 3 for 123. The weather was fine and the wicket good. The Victorians hatted carefully against strong howling and keen field-

ing. Woodful played a fine fighting Innings and Ills partnership with Hendry added 192 to the score. When Ryder joined Hendry runs came more freely, Ryder in particular tackling anything sent down.

Gregory’s bowling was wonderfully good and fast, and he kept a splendid length throughout. A thunderstorm caused a cessation of play before New South Wales were able to bat. M.C'.C. V. SOUTH AFRICA. CAPETOWN, .Tan. 28. At Johannesburg, Mar.vlehone commenced a match against South Africa. The weather was fine. Deane won the toss and sent England in on a fast wicket. There was a sensation before the game had gone far, Holmes being beaten by a good ball from Rissett in the second over. Sutcliffe and Tyldcsley played a dour, defensive game against good bowling, and at luncheon the score was 1 for 07.

When play was resumed, excellent howling and fielding kept the runs down. Sutcliffe was obviously surprised at a decision when he was given out leg before. It appeared rather :) s if he had hit the ball. The tail wagged with a vengeance, Peebles defying all attempts to dislodge him. His passive resistance amused the crowd, and with Staples he played out time. MARYLEBONE. —First Innings.
