(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) EIRE AMONG BEER. GISBORNE, Jan. 30. A lire last evening gutted the packing and bottling department of the New Zealand breweries. A large stock of beer was totally ruined, the heat breaking the bottles and causing many gallons to flow into the street. DR POM ARE RETURNS. AUCKLAND, Jan. 30. Dr Romaic returned by the Aorangi after attending a conference in Suva regarding the means of improving the equipment of Makogai leper station. A EIRE. AUCKLAND, Jan. 30. A large two-storeyed house owned by F. Alpe, was destroyed by fire at Ellerslie early on Sunday morning. The house was unoccupied and contained no furniture. The origin is unknown. Neighbours reported hearing an. explosion shortly before the tire was discovered. EXTRADITED. AUCKLAND. Jan. 30. Wilburn .Madison, extradited from Honolulu, arrived by the Aorangi to answer three charges of false pretences (bogus motor sales) in connection with a motor engineering business at Drury and Papakura. TONGAN CHOIR. AUCKLAND, Jan. 30. Thirty Tongan hoys, members of a choir touring Australia, arrived by the Aorangi en route. They are expected to give New Zealand concerts on their return. The party are in charge of Rev. A. H. Wood (Methodist Mission) and includes the Crown Prince of Tonga, aged nine, and Taufa Alina being the youngest. SUDDEN DEATH. PALMERSTON N., Jan. 30. While carrying out her duties as a cook at a local private hotel on Saturday evening Elizabeth Flynn. GO. collapsed and expired before medical nir was forthcoming. FIRES. OH A KUNE. Jan. 30. A fire broke out in the railway refreshment rooms at 10 p.m. at Ohakmio on Sunday. The railway lire lighting appliances kept the lire in check until the arrival of the brigade, and the damage was confined to the I inspector of Permanent Way’s office, kitchen, storeroom and coal house, all ol which were gutted.
PALMERSTON X., Jan. 30. A fire at Bmmythrope early this morning completely destroyed the store and dwelling house ol A. G. Polkinghornc, the occupants escaping in their night attire. Insurances are CoOO on premises and same cover on stock. HINDU INJURED CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 30. Bleeding from a painful wound in the right arm, which he stated had been inflicted hv a 10110-w-countryman with mi axe, Dahyablmi Sukhabhai. a Hindu, received treatment at the Hospital on Saturday night. Tin men were said to- have been involved in a disturbance which arose through a dispute of ownership of a bottle cf spirits. Sukhabhai’s injuries necessitated attention at the out patients’ departs meat of the His; ital. MUSICIANS’ AWARD. WELINGTON. Jan. 30. The Dominion Musicians’ Award was arranged ibe-fore the Holbey, Conciliation Commissioner, and the wages clause was settled on the basis of the present award. A week’s holiday on full pay was allowed at the end of twelve months and some alterations were made with regard to women operating mechanical instruments. The Din- tors get twenty-five ..hillings above, the ordinary rates. The Court reserves the power to amend the award at any time with regard to musicians in cabarets. The new agreement operates at the end of Summer Time.

Relieved to have originated in the kitchen chimney, a lire practically demolished the Empire Hotel, a three storeyed building of 40 rooms in Shakespeare Road, yesterday afternoon, only the front premises on tlio ground floor being left, Ihe blaze find a good field when the brigade arrived. The firemen’s efforts were hindered by a poor water supply, until a pump was brought into action. The Dames were conquered after a stern battle of two hours. Nine guests lost all belongings. Ilic building was owned by Gleeson estate, Auckland and covered with £-10(10 in the Commeeial Union Office. Contents and fittings for anproximateiy £2OOO were insuied in the South British and National Offices.
A FIRE. DUNE-DIN. Jan. 30. A fire completely gutted the fitting room of G. AY. Reilly, tailor, in Princess St. and damage was done by smoke and water to F. and R. Woods’ drapers, situated underneath. A. G. Neil. Solicitor, also had valuable legal documents and references destroveiT.
PACIFIC CABLE. AUCKLAND, Jan. 30. r c, Rain, Superintendent for the Pacific Cable Board, arrived from. Vancouver yestereve after a tour of various stations. Bain states the Board is till operating on a profitable basis, although the introduction of Benin wireless had taken away a certain degree of business. No more extensions to the Pacific Cable Service were contemplated at present, nor could rates be further reduced. Bain goes on to AA’ellington for embarkation by the Alaunganui for Sydney headquarters.
