HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 27th

The Council met at 7.45 p.m. Pres-ent:—-Messrs W. Jeffries (Deputy Alnyor, in the chair), J. King. T. AY. Duff, E. AA’. lleenan, G. Heinz, A. C. Armstrong.

Apologies were received for absence from the Mayor, .Air Evans, and Dr Teichelmann.

From Airs A. L. Brown, Park Street

complaining of danger from fire from adjoining section.—Received; adjoining owner, D. Dowling, to lie written to on the matter.

From N.Z. Refrigerating Company. Christchurch, advising that the total quantities of meat delivered into Hokitika during December. 1927, were three sheep.—Received. From R. B. Hammond, AVellington, intimating that be had resigned the position of Director of Town Planning, and has commenced professional practice as a Town Planning Consultant.— Received.

From Under-Secretary, Public Works Department. AYcllington, re Section 17. “Public AA'orks Act, 1908.” viz, “AA'liero land fronts road or street by less width than fSGft., frontage to be set back.”— Received.

From Secretary, Reeftou School Excursion Committee, applying for use of Cass Square- on Wednesday, the Ist prox.—Received and agreed to. From L. Reid, in reference to condemned fish, approving of action of Council.—Received.

From Public AA'orks Department Greymoutb, advising the District Eunil

Account bad been credited for the amount of 29(i, being -Alain Highways .Maintenance Subsidy for the year ending 31st Alareli, 1927.—Received. From AA’. H. Sherman, Fitzherhert Street, drawing attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the footpath fronting his residence, Eitzlierbert St. —Received ; Overseer to attend to.

From Green Island Borough Council forwarding copy of remit asking Conn nil to support remit to Annual Confer once of .Municipal Association, viz:—

“ 'That the law relating to the construction of Main Highways be amended so as to place the responsibility of the construction and maintenance of Alain Highways on the Afain Highways Board.”—Received and agreed to. From Frank Lewis, Sale St., asking permission to open footpath at his frontage to enable him to lay a. pipe drain to carry storm water into open drain.—Received ; request granted.

From A. AY. A’arrall. Stafford St., asking for tl) A few loads of gravel on the footpath in front of bis residence; (2) Permission to make an approach from the mail to bis gateway wider.—Received ; requests granted.

Secretary, Princess Theatre Coy.. Hokitika, application for renewal ol license.—Received ; request granted. From J. AA’alsli, Sexton, application for annual leave from Ist prox.—Received ; request granted. From Treasurer reporting receipts 2270 14s sil ; payments 2 158 19s 2d ; credit balance 2913 15s Id; loan account credit balance 2(i9 Ills.—Received. In reference to the supply of tar it was resolved that the Mayor. Chairman of Public Works and Air Duff wait on the Directors of the Gas Company to arrange for a contract lor -the supply of tar required. Accounts amounting to 2158 19s 2d were passed for payment. The Mayor took his seat. Mr Evans reported on result ol application to the Highways Board for a declaration of several Borough streets to he declared subsidiary main highways was received. Consideration of the application of Mr Sparkes for an extension of 1 Insanitary contract was ilelcrrei! to next meet mg. The report, ol the Reserves ( onmiittee was held over lor consideration at next meeting. The Council went into committee to consider the rate defaulters' list tor years 1925 and 19‘2(i. On resuming in C ouni-il it was resolved that the I own Clerk take legal proceedings to recover outstanding rates tor the years 1925 and 192(i.
