(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. The final Plunket Shield match of the season started to-day on the Basin Reserve, in fine weather, with a northerly breeze on a batsmen’s wicket. Auckland, had a days’ hunting, AVcllington having 8 wickets down for ■576 runs, when stumps were drawn. T. C. Lowrv who made 181, established with Badcock (91) a Plunket Shield record, for 507 runs, and with James (108) made 103 in the partnership lor the fifth wicket The howling was steady on the opening, hut as the batsmen became confident they scored ireely all round the wicket. N.S.W. v. VICTORIA. SYDNEY, Jan. 27. In the Sheffield Shield match, New South Wales, in the first innings, made 533 (Oldfield 101, Nicliolls 110).
Bowling: Morton 2 for 7, A’Beckett 6 for 119. Victoria in the first innings lost 1 wicket for 1,58 (Woodfull not out 74,
Hendry not out 73). The weather was fine and the wicket good. Oldfield and Nicliolls continued the overnight partnership, and, bydaring and breezy batting carried the score well along, adding runs from' almost every ball.
Victoria o|>ened badly, Ponsford being bowled by Gregory when six, the score reading 1 for 11. Woodfull and Hendry then showed a solid front to the attack, and by judicious cricket soon placed Victoria in a healthier position. When stumps were drawn, owing to the failing light, (both batsmen appearing well set, and had the bowling in hand.
