On Saturday, the Greymouth Waterside AVorkers’ annual picnic will be held at Cass Square. The programme of the AYcstland Baring Chili for the autumn meeting on Thursday, April 12th, appears in this issue. The annual meeting of the Gas Institute of New Zealand will he held at Christchurch from February 15th. to 18th. inclusive. Representatives will be present from all the Gas Companies Among the papers to be read and discussed will be one by Mr G. Heinz, of Hokitika, with regard to “Increasing the Efficiency of the Smaller Gas Works.” The visiting delegates and their ladies will he the guests of the Christchurch Gas Cov. on several excursions round about Christchurch.

County ratepayers are given a final reminder that overdue rates must he paid not later than the 2nd. prox. to escape, the penalty of 2s in the £. After Thursday next the ten per cent, penalty will he added to all outstanding rates and the amount sued for without further notice. As a result of the publicity already given iii regard to this matter, a considerable amount of rates have been paid during the last few days.

At the Westport Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, John Beattie and Michael Berry were charged with converting a motor car belonging to M illiam Molvneux to their own use at Burnett’s face on December 24. Beattie was also charged with assaulting Molvneux, who had one rib broken. It was alleged that defendants attempted to drive the car. and damaged the second gear to the extent ol £;> 17s (id ; also that Beattie assaulted Molvneux when the latter remonstrated with them. Beattie alleged that lie was struck first, and that lie retaliated in self-defence. Alter hearing lengthy evidence, Mr W. Meldrum. S.M., decided that Beattie was the aggressor. Defendants must he taught a lesson. On the charge of conversion of the car lie would convict them and fine each £2 with costs, and order them to pay £5 17s fid between them and costs £'3 Ss each. In the assault case Beattie was convicted anil fined £5 with costs totalling £‘2 7s Oil. Instructed by the Public I rustee. as executor in the estate of illiani McUay. deceased, to realise immediately on‘stocks, Messrs. W. Head, of Westport, of gladiolus and dahlia blooms. As MiHead is a well known flower enthusiast his blooms should he well worth going to see.

The wedding of Mr Walter K. Hoad, eldest son of Mr J. Rond. Blahetown. to F.llen Amelia, eldest daughter ol Mrs 0. Goodall, also of Hinkotowu, was solemnised at Holy Trinity Church. Greynioutli, yesterday morning, Archdeaeon Carr offieiatng. Ihe bride was attired in a frock ol white georgette, trimmed with pearls and radium lace. She wore a wreath and veil, and carried a bouquet of pink and while sweet peas. She was attended by three bridesmaids. Misses Minnie Goodall, her sister, who wore a frock ol pink crept- de chine and crinoline hat to match. Mavis Stevenson (cousin), who wore powder blue crepe do chine, with hat. to- tone, and Ruby Rond (bridegroom's sister), who wore heliotrope crepe de chine. All the bridesmaids carried bouquets, l.iltle Jean Goodall. as flower girl, wore a frock ol white crepe tie chine relieved with pink, and carried a basket of (lowers. Mr James lioiul. brother of .the bridegroom, was best man. and .Mr It. Goodall groomsman. After the ceremony, a reception was held at Goodall's tea rooms. A plucky rescue from drowning was effected last evening on the beach near the Greynioutli Hospital, by Mr Robert Clarke, carpenter, of Shakespeare Street, in the presence ol a good number of people. A place about a couple of chains to the south ol where the steamer 'Lauderdale was wrecked, where there was a strong rip seawards, was the scene of the incident. There wore about forty mixed bathers surfing at the time, and suddenly there was heard a erv of “ Help! " A man was semi to be in dilliculties in the rip. but none ol the bathers in the vicinity ,-ared to take the risk of going out in the rip lor the man. Mr Clarke was walking along the beach hilly clothed, and, hearing the cry, ho at once threw oil’ his coat, and rushing into the sea, swam out a distance ol between thirty and forty yards, and securing his man, succeeded in bringing him safely to the shore. Eyewitnesses declare it to have been one of the gamest rescues seen on the local beach, and. while he afterwards, made light of it himself, Mr Clarke is to he congratulated on his bravery, which should he worthy of being brought under the notice ol the Royal Humane Society.—" Argus.”
