(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) N.Z. IMPORTS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 19. For the period of twelve months ended Dee. 31st. 1927, New Zealand imports totalled £44,782,916 and exports £48,496,354 compared with £49,889,563 and £45,275,575 respectively for the corresponding period in 1926. Imports during December 1927 amounted to £3,949,198 and exports £5,398,481 compared with £4,388,096 and £3,031,698 in December of the previous year.

BUSH FIRES. AUCKLAND, Jan. 20.. Bush fires in the lower Waikato reported from Mercer on Saturday, subsided yesterday afternoon. It is believed that 250 acres of wattle plantation were destroyed on the Tnupiri coal company’s plantation, and about 8" acres of wattle on the Pukemiro Coal Company’s plantation. The damage 1estimnted at several thousands pounds, that on the Pukemiro plantation alone being about three thousand pounds.

UN EM PLOYM ENT DIFFICULTIES WELLINGTON, Jan. 20.

Men who were engaged in the work of finding relief for unemployed, are of opinion that the position will he worse than ever next winter, if measures are not taken to eope with it now. Official figures at present are 400, hut it is stated that actually twice that number arc out of work. Vocational workshops are suggested as one method of absorbing a ,section of those not fitted for ordinary labour. They have been found effective by Red Cross Society in many eases.

A CORRECTION. DANNEVIjRKE, Jan. 20. Captain Kight states in reply to the Sydney “Morning Herald” that he lias been able to satisfy the trustees, that with the exception of one or two small items, all the accounts in Australia have been mejt and the allegations of financial emharrassinenl are quite unwarranted, and at this time, uncalled for.

SLY-GROOGING FINE. ASHBURTON, Jan. 20. Twice previously adjourned because of the non-appearance of accused, tie ease against William Higgins, of having sold half a bottle of whisky in a no-license district was proceeded with this morning. When the case was first called on November 22nd, the Magistrate. Mr On-Walker, issued a warrant for the arrest. There was no appearance of Higgins to-day and a fine of £25 sterling was imposed, in default two months; costs and expenses totalling £4 13s 4d.

OBITUARY. AUCKLAND, Jan. 20. Obituary.—Mrs Jane Bollard, aged 89, at Avondale, wife of the late Jo' Bollard, M.P., and mother of the late Richard Bollard, -Minister of Internal Affairs.
