CRICKET.

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) OTAGO V. WELILNGTON. DUNEDIN. Jan. 20. The Plunket Shield game, Wellington v. Otago,- started in dull hut fine weather. The wicket having been baked by several days sunshine, was well nigh perfect, and the outfield in excellent condition. Blunt (Otago’s skippei) won tile toss, Knight and Cherry being me opening batsmen. McGirr commenced trundling to Cherry. The Otago batsmen opened cautiously, treating both McGirr and Massey with respect. McGirr was bowling dead on the wicket, getting considerable pace into his deliveries, and keeping a good length. Massey, with two men close up "at square leg, was swinging away with balls which pujwled the batsmen. Before the game was long in progress McGirr clean bowled Cherry (8-1-0-McMullan shaped well hv scoring the first boundary with a beutilul cut. Eventually, however, he cocked McGirr up towards Lambert, who reached forward to take a good catch.—2o-2-6. Badcoek relieved Massey at the pavilion end, and secured a maiden over. Blunt, who received an ovation, opened with his customary coolness, and Otago’s hopes began to soar. McGin s paciT seemed to increase as the game went on and he kept both batsmen very much subdued. Badcoek, too. bowled in a manner which kept them thinking and the scoring became very slow. ‘ Knight won applause by flicking McGirr nicely to the boundary. Blunt brightened matters considerably by square cutting McGirr crisply to the grandstand pickets and an overthrow by Badcoek brought 3 more runs n Otago’s credit. Blunt began laying on the wood. At 12.30 Knight was bowled by .McGirr, Cavanagh going in next, score then was 3 wickets for 51. Otago at luncheon had lost seven wickets for 113. Cherry, b. McGirr 1 Knight, b. McGirr H McMullan, c.
