(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) BEECH FOREST DESTROYED. SYDNEY, Jan. 12. Bush fires are sweeping through imo Otway and Dandenong Ranges, causing extensive damage. A number of homesteads were destroyed and much valuable timber in the beech forest is demolished. Several townships were only ytved by a- fortunate change of wind. FIRES RAGING IN TASAfANIA. lIOBART, Jan. 12. Rush fires are raging in the Southern part of the Huon District, and on -ha AA'cst Coast, causing heavy damage. INCOME TAX FRAUD. MELBOURNE, Jan. 13. As an outcome of the raid on the Small Arms Company in August. 1927. William Bartlett, Secretary of Abrahams Brothers, Fanny Coker, Miriam Hymanis, Esther Lyons, Louis Hymns, Phillip Hymns, and Harry Hymns were fined amounts totalling £IOOO, with total costs £2lO.
The charges to which all pleaded guilty were of making false income tax returns.
Defendants, with the exception of Bartlett, are relatives of Abrahams, and the Crown alleged that for some years past they acted as dummies, enabling Abrahams Bros to pay a rate of income tax 12 to 10 per cent, less than the proper tax.
