LATE LOCALS.

The funeral of the late Airs Sarah Taylor took place to Stafford cemetery yesterday afternoon and was attended by a large number of friends. The Rev.. Knowles-Smith conducted the service at the graveside.

The Legislative Council ol New Zealand lias shown an increasing tendency to be bound by the spirit of the British Parliament Act, which does not bind it statutorily but the Parliament Act does not work in that way. It provides that a Bill, it passed by the Commons in three successive sessions, will become law at the expiration of that time, even if rejected by the Lords. Two years however, must elapse between its second reading on its first introduction and its final acceptance by the Commons. That would prolong tlie period in New Zealand until after the next licensing poll. Hie indications are that there will lie no Licensing Bill next session, or none flint will have a chance of lieiiig passed. The prohibitionists will do their best no doubt

to nledge as many candidates as possible to tbeir programme at the next election ; but after the shock of this years happenings it may be more difficult in future to extract pledges from candidates which in the past have been given by too any of them, under pressure. irrespective of their own views ol sound public policy.—Dunedin ‘'Star.
