In the opening of the singles cliampionslnp at Christchureh, Kov. 1\ . Hayward (Hokitikai was beaten bj (Jray (Kelburn) IS to I~> and by J. Ainger (Cbristcliurcb) 18 to l!i. The rinks play opens to-day. Hokitika lias one rink engaged—AN. H. Sherman, ,J. J. breeze, Stevenson, and Rev. Hayward. Stevenson and Hayward are also taking part in the pairs. The nominations for the West Coast Howling Tournament on February (ith and following days at (Jreymouth, close on Saturday evening at 8 o’clock (pairs and rinks).
N. 7. TOURNAMENT. YESTERDAY’S RESULTS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, dan. 11. The howling tournament was continued to-day in dull windy weather. Alter the completion of ten rounds in the singles championship, those remaining in arc:—-M us ton (Ponsonby) :2 lives, 5 wins; Edwards (Teniuka) 2 lives, -1 wins; Reid (Lyall Bay) 2 lives, 4 wins; Ferguson (Balmacewan) 1 life, 4 wins, 1 loss; Lomas (Kelburn) 1 life, 4 wins, 1 loss; Scott (Caledonian) 1 life, 3 wins; Wooller (Remuera) 1 life, -1 wins, 1 loss ; C larke (Carlton) 1 life, .‘5 wins. ] loss.
Three well known players who were eliminated wore llarraway (Dunedin). Walker (Ponsonby), and Carswell (Taieri). llarraway was beaten by the Mastorton player Kerr lb-11, in the ninth round ; while \\ alkcr was beaten by Smellie (Green Island) in the same round, 18-13. Carswell, who won the singles championship in 1921. was beaten by J. B. Reid (Lyall Bay) in the eighth round by one point, the scores being 18-1 1 . Last year's singles champion, H. Clarke (Rocky Nook), and now of Callton, had no difficulty in disposing of F. Smith (Kaituna) in the sixth round, having a lead of 12 at the final head. His form was not nearly so good against Tyrell in the following round, suffering defeat by a remarkable margin of 17 points. He recovered in the eighth round to defeat Smellie (Dunedin) by 24 to 12, and scored another victory by beating Wooller (Remuera) 20-15. In the ninth round there was a sensational finish between Haworth and Lomas. Haworth was seven tip with two heads to go, and Lomas was three down at the 20tli head, and still requiring four at the last head. These he secured, and beat Haworth by one point in an extra head. All West Coast players were eliminated.
