WESTLAND TROTTING CLUB

The annual meeting of the West-land Trotting Club yesterday was a very enjoyable one. After a hca\y downpour the previous night, the day broke fine in the early morning, and it was beautifully fine, tempered with a light south-west breeze. ’I he track which was a trifle heavy in the early stages dried up splendidly and was in capital order. There was a large attendance, the gate takings showing an increase of £-10 over last year. Speculation was not quite as heavy as last year, the figures for the day being £6213 as against £6853), the previous year. The trotting was excellent and the finishes close in some events, the first race having only heads between the first three horses. The meeting passed off without any incident to mar the pleasure of the afternoon. The various officials of the Club were at their places and the races were run off promptly, while Afessrs Lynch handled tho investments promptly.

After the race for the Westland Trotting Club Handicap, the President of the Club (Afr Frank AfeGrcgor) speaking in tho saddling paddock thanked the Licensed Victuallers for their generosity in donating the handsome silver cup, and congratulated AH' Shaw, owner of Great Ando on his success in winning the principal event of the meeting and complimented the driver, .T. Davidson, on his excellent handling of his charge. He then asked the President of the Licensed Victuallers to present- the Cup to the winner. Air AV. G. Keller, in doing so. congratulated Air Shaw on this, his fiist success at. winning the Cup. expressing tho hope that it would not he the last occasion to visit the course and concst at future gatherings. He then presented the handsome silver cup to Air Shaw.

Air Shaw accepted the c-up. and expressed his pleasure at winning such a handsome trophy and his appreciation of the remarks of the speakers.
