Ladies semi-final—Airs Adams and Miss Knight began slowly. With games 2 3 against her. Miss Knight came to the net successfully three' times in succession and evened the scores. Airs Adams’ driving lacked a tiselul length but she put on pace and won the service lead I—3, then AHss' Knight lost accuracy and Mrs Adams took the first set 0-3. Miss Knight attacked vigorously at the opening of the second set and won the lust game by clean smashing from the forecourt. Airs Adams took the next by severe drives to the side lines slightly cut. Aliss Knight could not bold the service in the third game |,,,t she won the fourth bv stinging returns to the corners, two all, and four all was called later. Aliss Knight disconcerted her opponent by anticipation at the not and angle shots to the vacant corners and Airs Adams was slow at getting back in position and Aliss Knight won the set o—l- - Knight led 3-1 in the ‘■bird ami from then on Mrs Adams never looked like winning, she lacked vigour Miss Knight won the set 6—l and the match. It had been played in intense heat and the finish was tame. Aliss Spiers playing Aliss Alaefarlane was elearlv superior in the first sot. which she took 6-3. There were mainly good hard driving rallies, but Aliss Spiers had more pace and she was quicker to rush the net and more effective with finishing shots. Aliss Alaefarlane. though often defending I sent in nianv beautiful side-liners and 1 won applause for her pluck. Beautiful tennis marked the second set. Aliss J Alaefarlane played better than the first set. repeatedly outwitting Aliss Spiers. Her returns off almost impossible shots wen> wonderful. The Auckland girl ran to a lead of 3—l. but could not hold it owing to Aliss Spiers clapping on pace and volleying for winners across the court. Aliss Afnefarlanc. serving, lost the sixth game to love and Miss Spiers also took the seventh. Aliss Alaefarlane next won a love game on the service. 1 all. In the 9th. game Aliss Spiers led 40 love and won it from 40—15 to lead five i games to four. This was the critical .stage for Afiss Afacfarlane. She served hard with the wind and evened to five games all by fine play. She then captured Aliss Spiers’ service and was a game ahead. She lost the twelfth to love by driving out. Six all. then seven all was called and eight all. It. was a hard tussle with ATiss Alaefarlane lasting better. She led 9-8, but Aliss Spiers steadied and won the next two games, to lead ’ 10-9.
