AMUSEMENTS.

EVERYBODYS’ PICTURES “ THE DESERT'S TOLL ” TO-NIGHT. In " The Desert’s Toll,” the new Metro-Goldwyu-.Mayer picture which is to-night’s attraction at the Princess Theatre, something entirely new in adventurous romances is presented. Francis McDonald, the star, is exceedingly refreshing as a romantic hero, lie is decidedly picturesque, possessed of a charming personality, and of an unearthly ability to ride a horse. Some of his horseback feats arc hair-raising in their obvious danger and thrilling speed. No pains were spared to make this one of the most novel pictures of the year as regards story, settings, and general treatment. It was directed by Cliff Smith, recognised as one of the greatest of directors of this particular type of motion picture, and Smith transported his company from Los Angelos to the Big Horn Ranch in Nevada. and thence to perhaps, the most scenic portion of the State of Utah. Bryce Canyon, to stage this beautiful out-of-door drama. In this great drama of the open spaces Kathleen Key appears as the heroine. Tom Santschi is the villainous corner of the triangle. I lie action of the gripping story was laid in the most beautiful settings imaginable. The countless, spires of Bryce Canyon add an inviting air of mystery to the development of the plot. Smith, who directed ‘‘ The Desert’s Toll,” was responsible for the direction of most of William S. Hart’s great successes. He knows the great outdoors as few motion picture directors will ever know it and ho gives of this knowledge freely in his interpretations of this dranui.
