OPOSSUMS IN WESTLAND

Tile Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs in reply to representations made by Mr Seddon, M.R., regarding liberation oi fresh stock of opossums in AA'estland with the object of cultivating nil industry, says:— '• I have duly received the letter', addressed to you by the lion. Secretary, Westland Acclimatisation Society, and the Secretary, Chamber of Commerce, Greymouth. relative to the question of authorising the liberation of opossums in South AYeslhmd. “ In reply. I have to inform you that this matter has been before Cabinet uti several occasions, hut up to the present, it lias been decided not to authorise the liberation of the animals in furl her areas.

“ jTliere ,is. 'as you, are doubtless aware, divided opinion as to the exx tent of the damage which may lie caused by opossums, mid while il is understood that not much, il any, damage may he caused to lorcst areas, on the other hand, il is urged that opossums have an injurious effect on bird liie generally. Aon will, therclore. 1 think. agree l that il would lie unwise to authorise the further liberation of the animals until some more definite information can lie obtained on the subject at issue. " I may add for your information, that further investigations are being made.”
