It urges United States to “ formulate and place in effect similar regulations on our behalf whereby a surcharge equal to that imposed on our commerce shall be assessed ill addition to ordinary duty on traffic landed at ports in Canada destined for United States.”

U,S. MELODRAMA. CHICAGO, Dec. 0. While 200 guests and chorus girls lay prone on the floor to escape the .sheaves of builds, bandits and plainclothes police fought a battle with machine gulls and revolvers ill the Parody Club last night. One gin dancer was killed outright, and three bandits, three policemen, and two guests wore seriously wounded. The Parody is one of the greatest night clubs in the city, and is a favourite rendezvous for theatricals and clubmen. It was after mid-night when a gang of bandits entered the clltb, lined up tile guests under cover of machineguns, and made them band over their valuables. Word was secretly conveyed to the police and a strong lorce was rushed to tiu; pjace in motor cars. Immediately they appeared tbe bandits opened fire, the police replying with pistols aild automatic rifles. As the performers and patrons had no opportunity to escape they bad to iling themselves down where they stood to avoid being riddled by the lusillndes.

WRECK LOST. NO HOPE. NEW YORK, Dec. 21. News from Provinectown states when a line attached to the submarine parted during the gale, the wreck was lost. The Agriculture Department an nounoed an area of -17.897,000 acres fur winter wheat was sown this autumn. The area- sown in 1927 was 10.2 per cent more than the revised estimate of 10,089.000 acres sown in autumn, 1020. The condition of winter wheat on Ist Deecmlbcr was 80 per cent of normal compared with 81.1 per cent on Ist Decern her, 1920, and a ten years average of eighty-four per cent.
