A new hook lias just been Written about Colonel Lawrence, the Wonderful little archaeologist who Worked ilp the Aral; revolt against the Turks, and so largely helped to organise the final triumph of Allefibv’s forces in Palestine. Anyone who has read “ With Lawrence in Arabia.” or Lawrence’s own hook ‘‘Revolt in the Desert.” will he interested to learn a little more about this fascinating personage. As people ought to know, says a reviewer, Lawrence is singularly retiring and unambitious, ind lie refused all sorts of distinctions iml emoluments after tlie war. But when he found that the Allies did not mean to keep faith with the Arabs he
let himself go ” in extremely definite terms. The soldiers and the politicians —who for the most part hated Lawrence as a civilian or an outsider—resented fiercely the steps that Lawrence took during the war to consolidate tli Arabs by promising them and their leaders control of their own country in strict accordance with the declared policy of the Allies. But alter the war it was found that “socic-t agreements” prevented Britain from fulfilling her pledge, and Feisal and his followers were expelled from Damascus and Syria to make way for the French. Feisal was to some extent indemnified, as the new kingdom of Iraq—consisting mostly of Mesopotamia—was set up lor him to govern. But the Arabs and the Syrians held that they had been betrayed, and Lawrence agreed wit them. All- Graves, the author of the hook referred to which reference is made above, tells us that Lawrence sought a personal audience with King George, and formally surrendered his British and foreign decorations as a protest against this breach of faith. Tliis dramatic scene is quite in keeping with Lawrence’s picturesque and sensational career, but I think, conclude*the reviewer, that the story also says something for the King.
