The Victorian Athletic team, minus three stars (Krogen, White, and Hyde) arrived by the Aorangi arrived to compete in the championships at Wellington on December 26th and 27th. It consists of A. ,1. Watson, hurdler, L. M. 3fason, jumper, E. 3f. Davidson, runner and jumepr, C’. J. Lane, sprinter, A. D. Mclntosh weight putter, G. R. Lundquish, broad jumper and de cathlon specialist, Alan Scott 100 and 220 yards’ sprinter, L. Wisclier. 120 yards’ hurdles. The last-named came over at his own expense.
NATIVE BOY SHOOTS CO3IPANION 3VAIROA, Dec. 19.
A distressing accident occurred today at Frasertown, when a 3laori lad, Nateuc Hunwai, aged eight, fatally shot his companion, Whannga Rigby, aged seven, with an old gun found in a whare. The right side of the face was blown away. Death was instantaneous. An inquest will he held. SCHOOL TEACHER’S TRAGIC END. DUNEDIN, Dec. 19. Alexander IToggans, school teacher, aged 43 years, was found dead at liis house in Cargill Street, this evening, with the top of his head blown off by a revolver bullet. Evidence indicated that lie shot himself. He was a married man with a family, and had lieen teaching at the normal school for two or three years. AN INQUEST. HAMILTON, Dec. 19. The inquest on Nelson Jackson, farm labourer, 25, who met his death in a head-on motor cycle collision With Erie Storey, was concluded to-day. The Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to injuries accidentally sustained in a collision.
CO3I3IITTED TO BORSTAL. CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 19. Nine charges of breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime, were preferred against Cecil 3fclntosh, Tiniaru, who appeared before AH Justice Adams for sentence to-day. 31 clutosh, who had previously been ‘thrice before the Court, was committed to a Borstal institution for three years. LEASE OF HAG LEY PARK. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 19. 3lr Justice Adams gave judgment to-day in the ease of the City Council v. Pync, Gould, Guinness Ltd., an action for rates alleged to be due on a portion of Hagley Park, leased by the firm from the Domains Board for grazing of sheep.' The decision was that Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., were not liable for rates. PRISONERS SENTENCED. WELLINGTON, Dee. 19. Prisoners were sentenced to-day as follow: Gerald Swanson, 29, clerk, assault, with intent to rape, three years’ hard labour. i George Armitage. 33, labourer, breaking, entering and theit, two years’ hard labour. George I/Cster Rolfc, 23, labourer, breaking and entering with intent, two years’ hard labour. Alfred Lewis, 20, four charges <>l breaking, entering and theft, two years at Borstal.
CITY PROPERTY DEALS. AUCKLAND, Doc. IS). A property ileal involving over £200.000 in the purchase and rebuilding of premises fronting Queen and Customs Streets, and the construction of an arcade linking them round the back off the Dihvorth Building, has been effected. The price paid for the Queen Street frontage is approximately £1,758 a foot, and is a record for the City. At the price of £58.000, the Davis Properties Ltd. have acquired the block of A. li. Donald, Ltd., in lower Queen Street, which was recently purchased by Starmont and Sons, and another party for £52,000. This block has a frontage to Queen Street of 33 feet, and a depth of 108 feet runniftg right hack to Ford Street lane. The price paid by J. and AY. •). Fletcher to the Public Trust Office for a block with a 05 feet 3 inch frontage to Customs street and adjacent to the Dihvorth Building is £48,000. 'I ho site has a depth of 90ft.

Bresson has been appointed Lady Principal of Avonside Girls School. CHILD DROWNED. ASHBURTON, Dec. 20. A three year oid bay, Ronald Balford, was drowned at Tunvald last evening. He was staying with Ins grandfather, W. Bryant, and went out into a field with an uncle, aged 17, and while the latter was engaged in turning over hay, wandered away and the body was found in a creek nearby. FEDERAL CUSTOMS DUTIES. WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. The Minister of Customs announces that lie has been advised by the Commonwealth Government that the date on which increased duties on butter, cheese and potatoes, affected by the recently revised Australian tariff, will become operative so iar as the Dominion is. concerned, will he on and from loth June next. The amended rates are Gd per pound on butter and cheese and 2s Gd per ewt on potatoes.
