The acceptances received by the Westland Racing Club for the race meeting opening on the Hokitika racecourse on Boxing Day speak for themselves. The entries constitute a record for the (Tub. and as there is a strong string of horses from all parts of Canterbury. as also from the North Island, there should be no douht about the quality competing at the meeting. The racecourse and appointments are in excellent order and the (Tub appears to have in prospect all the elements necessary for a highly successful meeting. Both Monday and Tuesday of next week will be close public holidays, and that fact will assure a large attendance on both days. The local meeting should open the AVest Coast racing circuit very auspiciously.

A miner named Reginald Daniels, was admitted to the Greymouth Hospital yesterday afternoon, suffering front internal injuries received while working at the No. 2 mine, Liverpool Collieries Kewanui. The injured man was caught amongst a rake of coal tubs and severely crushed in the pelvic region. Prior to being conveyed to the hospital, he was attended by Dr G. TV. Meade. His injuries are not considered to he of a serious nature, and late last night, he was reported to he progressing satisfactorily.

Although not on the passenger list, there were some interesting arrivals by the Tamaroa, which has arrived at Wellington from London. Those were numerous little insects of various species, whose future home is to he the Cawthron Institute at Nelson, where their habits and possible proponsities towards destroying some of the Dominion’s pests will he watched with interest. Owing to the wet summer in England, it has been a very had year for collecting insects, and this present shipment is looked upon by entomologists as a poor one.

Tile annual meeting of the Hokitika Law Society was held in the Law Library, on the 10th. inst. There wore present: Mr J. Park (President). Messrs F.leock, Murdoch. 11. Park, Pilkington and Sellers. Mr Park was unanimously re-elected President for the ensuing year. Various matters of interest to the profession were debated, and the matter of providing further now hooks for the library arranged. It was decided that the offices close for the Xmas vacation at 1 p.m. on the 21tli. inst. and rc-open on Alondav, oth. January.

Members of the legal profession of Hokitika met in the Law Library yesterday for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr L. W. Louisson, Clerk of Court, who has been transferred to Greymouth. Mr ,T. Park (President of the Society), expressed members’ keen appreciation of Air Louisson’s courtesy and efficiency during the time he had been in Hokitika, and expressed the regret felt at losing him. On behalf of the profession, he extended to Mr Louisson best wishes for his future success and for the health and happiness of himself and Mrs Louisson. As a

small token of their appreciation, ho presented Mr Louisson with a smoker’s outfit. After other members had sjxiken, Mr Louisson. in a few well chosen words, thanked the profession for their kind remarks and gift. Opportunity was taken to welcome Air Carver, who succeeds Air Louisson here.
