Tim question of wider publicity for Westland as a means to attract more visitors, should he in greater favor, following (he eulogy of Mr Ainery regarding the notable attractions Westland possesses. Our jnuch travelled visitor said to a Wellington pressman:
“There is nothing in the world that l know of to compare with the striking contrast between the almost tropical verdure of the West Coast bush, and the great Franz Josef Glacier, descending right through it from the world of snow above. The Franz Josef Glacier is certainly, taking it all round, the most beautiful glacier 1 have seen anywhere.” There is surely a text for much legitmate advertising to impress not only our own people, but those overseas, with the attractions awaiting admiration in the south. The district has done a good deal in the matter of publicity, but more sustained work is necessary. There is very solid gro-n<l now on which to approach the Government to co-operate in advertising as also in developing tourist resorts in this district. The praise bestowed by Mr Amery will travel far, and many will be drawn here, but the beauties of the Franz Josef Glacier do not alone exhaust our attractions. Other localities are well worth seeing, while the visitor is touring the district, and development work will help to make other resorts more accessible and convenience for enjoyment more ready. The proposal to do more pictorial advertising through the daily and weekly newspapers should bo very helpful, while tlio publication of short articles oil scenic resorts would also Tie arresting to the general render. The district lias been well served by booklets in the past, flic local enterprise in that respect. leaving little to be desired. These publications have gone far and wide, hut as Air Amery had suggested, (lip people of the Dominion should heroine interested in their own attractions, and one way to arrest tlio.ir attention would be through the weekly newspapers which feature illustrations so excellently. To that way a. large field could lie covered, and a very general knowledge of AA’estlnnd scenic resorts spread broadcast.. The subject is one which it would be hard to exhaust, and a splendid record of all phases of our scenery could bo published as a very attractive form of advertising flic <1 istrict.
