it is understood that although the Bailway Department will run a passenger train from Christchurch to G roymoiitli on Christmas Day (Sunday) there will lie no connecting service with Hokitika. An appeal for a through service has resulted in a negative answer being received. As a result motors will he running from Arthur’s Pass for the convenience of Hokitika and Westland passengers generally. Passengers are now booking for the outward motor trip. As only a few extra miles running are involved it is regrettable the through service to Hokitika cannot lie provided as the following day the Coast racing circuit opens at Hokitika and many patrons would travel. The Department is, however, running a picnic train from Grcymouth to Lake Maliinapun on Christmas Day, so the local staff will require to be on duty.
In a “Gazette” issued on Thursday there are published regulations under the Education Act, 1914, amending those at present in force relating to attendance, registers and returns, public schools (salaries, grading, staffing, etc); incidental expenses of secondary schools; manual and technical instruction; school and class libraries; payment of subsidies on voluntary contributions; payment to members of the General Council of Education and district advisory committees; examination and classification of teachers; training colleges; leave of absence; free places in secondary schools, district high schools, technical high schools and technical schools and classes, and length of school year; also relating to payment of grants in aid of free kindergarten certificates, and to free school hooks and stationery in certain cases. The daily train service to and from Christchurch for the period ol the Christinas and New Year holidays commences on Monday and continues till January 7th. Messrs W. McKay and Son, notify their business premises will bo closed on .Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week for the purpose of stocktaking. Two cups to be competed for at the Midsummer Meeting of the Heefton Jockey Club are now on view at Ross’ Sports’ Shop, Revell St. The trophies are sure to excite good competition in the respective events.
There will be considerable movement with timber by rail during the next few days, and a quantity of white pine is to be railed north for export to Australia from Greymouth. before Christmas. Two oversea steamers are due to load next week. A large quantity of pine timber stacked here for some time past will be shipped.

A slight commotion was caused in Stafford St. North. Timaru, on Wednesday afternoon, by a heavy five-seal-er motor-car. which had been left on the slope of t.lie bill near the corner of Selton Street, suddenly running backwards of its own accord. The car travelled fairly straight for about half a chain. Then it slewed across the road in front of the traffic, and, jumping t.he channel on the eastern side, crashed into a plnteglass window of a vacant shop, shattering the glass and doing damage to the tiled parapet. The ear itself suffered damage. It was the property of Mr N. AT Orbeil. of Totnra Valiev.’
Among the school teachers retiring from office after a record of long service of teaching, reports a northern paper, is Mr G. K. Sinclair, headmaster of Hamilton West School, who lias been a teacher for >l7 years. His first position was in Dublin, and later ho was at Ross, Hokitika, Kumara. and Hastings. lie received his appointment to Hamilton West five years ago. For a long period lie lias been associated with the work of the New Zealand Educational Institute. Many will recall Mr Sinclair’s residence in this district in the years gone by. During bis stay here he married a daughter of the late Mr R. Hirter, of Ross. It is understood Mr and Airs Sinclair will make their future home in Auckland.
