(By Telegraph—Per Press Association. WHEAT INFECTION SUCCESS. (Received this day at D. 30 a.m). SYDNEY, Dec. 15. 'l'he “ Daily Telegraph ” says the outstanding feature revealed by the inspection of the season’s wheat crops in all districts is the almost complete freedom from hunt or stinking smut infection. This triumph for science was achieved by the investigations of Dr Durnell-Smith, of Sydney. The tests ran through several years before the result was placed in the hands of burners. The “ Telegraph ” adds that with this vear’s results before them probably 90 per cent of the farmers aro satisfied that the hunt enemy is quite at their mercy.
ANDERSON’S STATUS. SYNDEY, Dec. 15. New South Wales Tenuis Association refused J. O. Anderson's application for re-iiistatenient as ail amateur. Ihe grounds for the application were that lie felt he could do more for Australian tennis as an amateur. He added that he had signed a contract to put his name on a certain racquet contiact that would firing him £SOO sterling yearly for ten years. It re-instated he (od not want the Association to inteifere with this contract.
NATIVE’S GRIEF. CANBERRA, Dee. 15. Among the despatches received by the Governor-General in connection with the Solomno Island ninsseare. was a copy of a letter from Chief John Dornwowe to the Resident Comissioncr. which refers to Bell, one of the murdered officials. The letter says: “Bell came among our villagers, brought peace and made murder cease, and now „ur people of Urn have killed him. W feel very sorry, because he helped us in many ways, and made it possible to .go about in peace. Now we are very grieved. We are left orphans because our chief is no more.” WELCOME RATN. BRISBANE, Dee. 15. Excellent general rains besides bonefitting the State prospects as a whole, have relieved the drought areas.
