(By Telegraph—Per Press Association. BROKEN HILL STEEL WORKS. SYDNEY, Dec. 3. The management of the Broken Hill Proprietary Steel Works (Newcastle) decided that additional sections be closed, in pursuance of a- policy ot retrenchment which is the result, of foreign competition, and six hundred additional men will ho dismissed at the week-end.
N.S.W. CHAMPIONSHIP. SYDNEY, Dee. 3. The results of the swimming contest are as follows : —229yds. State Ladies’ Championship: Ettie Robertson 1, J. Sheidow 2, M. doling 3. Time .3.22 4-5. Miss Robertson’s swim beat her previous Australian breaststroke record by two seconds.
DUNN SHIELD RECORDS. SYDNEY. Dec. .3. The first- day of the Dunn Challenge Shield competitions, produced splendid sport. H. J. Scott created a now State record for the 12.3 yards hurdles, covering the distance in 15 7-10 sees. W. Hunt did a quarter of a mile in 50 2-5. Both these are Shield records. J. Martin covered a mile in 4.3,3 1-5. BUTTER. AND CHEESE DECLINES SYDNEY, Dec. 4. The price of butter is to lie reduced a, halfpenny to-morrow, to Is 7d retail. Cheese will be reduced a penny, to lid, and bread 10J for large. SURFING TRAGEDY. SYDNEY, Dee. 5. Thousands of surfers whom an exceptionally hot day had drawn to Clovelly Reach witnessed an heroic struggle by thirty members of the local surf club to save the lives of three youths who wore washed out. Two were saved and one, Thomas Wombridge, was drowned. The spot is very and the rescuers were badly knocked about and bruised in their efforts. Several were hospitalled.
EMPLOYERS CONFER. SYDNEY. Dec. 5,
A number of representatives of overseas steamers to-night departed for Melbourne where important conferences are holding this week to discuss the strike position. Tho effects are already beginning to be severely felt outside of direct shipping and the occupation ot carting. Other firms are largely reducing hands.
STRIKE NEWS. SYDNEY, Dee. 5. The strike position is unchanged. There is plenty of free labour offering, but as the bureau is not yet established, it was refused. Several additional vessels were tied up during the week-end. There were only two departures and in both instances much cargo had to be left behind. The liner Maloja due at Sydney today, is already four days’ late and is compelled to bring cargo which it vis intended to land at Melbourne and Svdnov. MELBOURNE, Dee. 5. There is much speculation regarding the possibility of hearing the plaints of both parties in the dispute before Judge Beehy at the Arbitration Court to-day, as when Beehy had the ease ol the men before him some months ago, lie refused to listen to them until they agreed to work under the terms ol the award. ADELAIDE. Doe. 5. Watcrsiders claim that as the men offered to work coastal vessels on Saturday and none of them were 'licked up, the owners have instituted a lookout. All coastal shipping is now “die. Another large carrying firm have given all their employees notice of dismissal on Saturday. BRISBANE, Dee. The Secretary of Cairns branch of the Watcrsiders’ Federation has received notice from the Management Committee of the Federation that when the steamer Kallatina arrives she is *o be worked overtime if necessary.
