WOOL INDUSTRY’,

LONDON, Nov. 28

The “Times” says the wool industry in West Riding is again on the edge of a crisis. No immediate dislocation of business is expected, but the dangers of an armed truce are obvious. A majority of both parties are anxious to avoid a struggle, hut the chance exists of an isolated firm precipitating trouble and preventing a recovery from the depression which began in 1925. Wages in Yorkshire are now almost twice as high as before the war. There lias been no adjustment since the return to the gold standard and the consequent fall in the cost of living. It would seem that the present wages in West Riding are somewhat higher than the industry can bear. There is a widespread feeling among those operatives that the organisation of industry loaves something to lie desired and in the present deadlock employers can well afford to make a gesture of conciliation.

FRENCH TREATY. PARIS. Nov. 27. The text of the Franeo-Jugo-Slavian Treaty pledges concerted action in the event of an unprovoked attack, provided the action is within the scope of the League of Nationals Pact of non-aggression; also to agree jointly to examine any question likely to endanger their external security, again subject to the League’s final decision. A clause recognising the rights and obligations of the Powers involved in the League’s non-aggression past disposes of the report that the Treaty involves mutual support, even against the League’s decision. Roth agree to settle disputes either diplomatically or by arbitration.
