TRIBUTE. TO JAPAN. AUCKLAND, Nov. 21
A signal tribute was paid to the Consul-General for Japan, Air Tokugawa. by the Prime Minister, Air Coates, at the Rotary Club’s luncheon to-day to the Secretary for State for tho Dominions, Air L. S. Amery.
Welcoming the Consul-General on his second visit to the Dominion, the Prime Afinister said New Zealand would never forget the debt she owed Japan who came to her aid in her hour of need. “When wo were in trouble during the war years, Japan came to our assistance and provided warships so that our men might be safely delivered at the theatres of war,” said Air Coates. “That is a service which New Zealand can never forget.”
Air Tokugnwa was heartily applauded as he rose to acknowledge ihe Prime Minister's compliment.
LEVEL CROSSING SAIASH. PUKEKOIIE. Nov. 22
The Aucklaml-Thames express ran into a furniture-laden motor lorry at Rockland level crossing at 10.57 this morning, William Austin Rraithwnito near Alanurewa, being killed. His son Leslie James llraithwaite, driver of the vehicle was slightly injured and a man named Scott who was shitting to IJarrisville, where he had acquired a farm, was seriously injured. He was lospitalled. The lorry was badly mulshed.
BRIDEGROOM’S AIISIIAP. WELLINGTON, Nov. 22. The explosion of a. tin of methylated spirits, near which they were working with a lamp, resulted in George .lessen, 25, and Charles Stanton, 25, being badly burned at the Co-op. Dairy Producers’ Freezing. Company’s Buildings. Jensen was severely injured on the head, arms, body and legs. Ills condition is serious. It is understood that lie was to have been married to-night. Stanton was injured on tho arms and head, not seriously. AYELLTNGTON. Nov 23. Jensen died in the hospital during the night. The other man shows a slight improvement but is still in a somewhat critical condition.
POISONED BY GAS. AUCKUAD, Nov. 22. Airs Janet Alorrison, who was adpiited to the Auckland Hospital on. Sunlay in a critical condition as the result if gas poisoning, died to-night. Her nisband, James Alorrison, is reported ;o be improving.
AIISSING YACHTSMEN. AUCKLAND, Nov. 22. The latest advice from search parties for William AYilliams and James Bowman, of Taknpuna, who have not been scon since their yacht capsized on Saturday afternoon, states that no trace has been discovered. The opinion w#. expressed by one of tlie searchers that it, was impossible that either man could have survived.
CITY LOANS. WELLINGTON, Nov. 22. The three loans totalling .0200.875, were carried at a poll to-dav, 7,130 ratepayers, voting out of a total on the roll of 28,853. For the Street Paving Loan of £201,000, 3,548 voted in favour and 3,314 against. For the Construction of Footpaths Loan of £63.000, 4.059 voted in favour and 2.81 S against. For the Conveniences Loan of £26,875, 4.205 voted in favour and 2,762 against. This loan of £290.875 when presented in one issue was rejected by the ratepayers in September bust-.
PORT CAROLINE PRODUCE. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 22
A local firm lias received advice from London to-day confirming the rumour regarding the damage to the Port Caroline’s cargo. The steamer had in her cargo seventy thousand boxes of butter, thirty thousand of which were stored in number two bold which was principally affected. Of these, fifteen thousand were badly damaged and fif teen thousand partially damaged. AT the butter was from the North Island
SUPREME COURT. HAAHLTON, Nov. 22. The Supreme Court sessions opened to-day before Afr Justice Herdnian. There are seven criminal cases for trial, true bills being returned in till cases. William Frederick Atcoro, who was unrepresented by counsel, was charged with the theft of a quantity of bedding. valued at £l3. He was found not guilty of theft, but guilty on a charge of receiving; sentence being deferred. A case is proceeding in which a wellknown ALaori ohieftan of Ongoroto, named AVaaka' Alatenga, is , charged with the theft of 21 head of cattle, the property of Walter Sampson.
car and train collide. REEFTON LAD INJURED. NELSON, Nov. 23. A serious collision occurred at a level railway crossing about a mile on tin' Nelson side of Wakefield, between a car driven by Herbert Lee, aged 19. of Reefton, and the NelsonBelgrove train. Lee is suffering from slight concussion, but bis condition is not serious. The car struck the train, resulting in the derailing of two trucks behind the engine. Tho motor was carried through the cattle stocks and smashed up. with Lee-beneath the wreckage. His condition was reported this morning as satisfactory. A man named Saddler, of Reefton, also in the car was thrown clear and was unhurt. AfAn AIISSING. GISBORNE. Nov. 23. Thus Hanna, aged 25, was missing from his homo last evening. His clothes were found on the Waimata river hank at 8.45 p.m. The police are searching this morning.
