Australian & N.Z. Cable Association,
FASTEST STEAMERS. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 14.' Harold de Olgia, of the Matson Ocean Line, who has returned after a three months’ trip to Britain, said: “There are between 25,000 and 30,000 travellers who will make the crossing from Australia to England in the next twelve months, and front my observation most of these people will travel by way of the United States. The average Englishman or Australian wants to travel in larger ships, and I found that they are not averse to riding in American vessels so long as they can travel in comfort on the fastest steamers.’’
MINERS’ STRIKE. NEW YORK, Nov. 15. The American Federation of Labour meeting at Pittsburg, voted to lay the cause of 130 thousand striking coal miners in Pennsylvania, Ohio, before Mr Coolidge, and to demand an immediate investigation from Governor Fisher.
They alleged the misuse of power by agencies of the State Government against eighty-five thousand mine workers. It is declared that these men and their 125 thousand dependents are on the verge of destitution. The Labour Committee states that the legal injunction process lias been used, not to sustain the law or provide equity, but to deny the workers the rights to secure justice under the law.
