SUPREME court.
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) CHARGES AGAINST BRIGGS. CHRISTCHURCH,, Nov. 16. In the Supreme Court, Samuel Phoenix Briggs, a law clerk, pleaded not guilty to stealing £337 belonging to Sinun-oiuls’ Estate administered by bis employer, A\ r . Cracroft AYilson. Counsel said the prisoner was employed by Wilson, a solicitor, under unsatisfactory arrangements by which the prisoner shared in the profits. Briggs told the jwilice he did not receive any wages or profits and had been forced by necessity to steal the moneys in the estate. Ho also said gambling was bis downfall. In bis address to the jury the prisoner .said he took the money and used it, but not as deliberate theft. He got no salary and he bad to go home at night to find his children without food. The case is proceeding.
