THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Tin: Petrol Tax
There is a great tleal to be said for the principle of a petrol tax. it is the fairest method of taxing the motorist—fairer even than the tax on tyres, for tyres deteriorate when the ear is idle. And since the motorist is increasing rapidly in numbers—the total number of vehicles registered seven months ago was 162,000—and is demanding better roads, it is meet that he should pay his fair share of the cost of road construction and maintenance. The motor lias changed the whole face of the road problem, and owing to its requirements the cost of construction over many miles has enormously increased. —Auckland " Star.”
