A GOOD SPRING .MONTH. WELLINGTON, Nov. 7. The following weather summary for October is supplied by the Director ol tlie Meteorological Office: During October the i-iinlall was, as a, rule, poorly distributed in time and in place, and the 1 -Itli and 23rd were the only days on which it was at all of jffiieriil chsimotor. The tut/il for I lie month was < onsiderably below normal over tlio whole ol the North Island, and in Marlborough and Nelson. In tin* South Island, Canterbury and Otago had a moderate excess, while in Westland the differences from normal were slight.

The pressure was chiefly <1 a westerly type and the disturbances were of a slight to moderate intensity. Changes were generally ton rapid to allow of rain developing to liny extent.

On Ihe 23rd, however, a very in - tense cyclone developed east ol the South Island, and on the 2-ltli, at the Chatham Islands, the barometer fell to 29.07 inches. From tin; 23rd to the 26th strong southerly winds, to gales were experienced, and very (old tempo.litures prevailed. Di rear of tins cyclone, light fails oi snow occurred on t.he 23rd and 2-ltli in various parts of tin* South Island, and also in tlie high central area of the North Island.

Ground frosts were reported on the mornings of the 26th and 2(Uh, in ire especially' in Canterbury and Otago, hut the damage to fruit trees was tortur.alely only slight. There was a tendency for anticyclones to move in more northern latitudes, hut one which controlled tlie weather between the 25th and the 29th was centred over New Zealand on the 27th. with tlie pressure gs high as 30.50 inches. On tlie whole, fair to fine weather predominated with moderate to strong nortli-westerlv winds.

Cold spell from the 23rd to tlie 25th was, however, severe, especially in Canterbury and Otago arid some losses of lambs occurred. Though dry, tlie month was a good spring month, it was particularly favourable for sheep, hut less so, owing to dryness lor the dairy industry.
