Tho newspaper “Despatch” reveals how the Unknown Soldier’s tomb in the Abbey was secretly opened, and souvenirs of remembrance placed on tho grave deposited therein. “ Leave the Abbey alone,” is almost the unanimous comment on the Abbey report. One expert emphasises that if plans are required all the architects of the Empire should he invited to compete, since "Westminster Abbey is an Empire heritage. Scathing comments are being made about many existing effigies stated to represent nonentities, unworthy people and even disreputable characters. It is suggested that the Abbey should be weeded out, when there would he plenty of room for really famous persons. It is even asked why there are any Abbey monuments at all. Sir Martin Conway suggests there is sufficient space in the existing cloisters for a Century ol memorials. ,lt is declared that a modern annexe could only he an imitation, which would he vandalism, while r new north aisle is ruled out been use i would completely alter the interior ol the Abbey as it known throughout the ■world.
