An escape from a serious fire took place at Mr D. Panckhurst’s residence Ileeftoii about eleven o’clock on Tuesday night when a bedroom in which Mr J. Panckhurst was sleeping was found to be on lire. The other occupants of the house were awakened bv the noise coming from this room, which on entering was full of smoke and Hnm.es, and J. Panckhurst was endeavouring to put out the flames. The mattress and clothes on the bed were all alight as well as the curtains on the window, and the flames had to be extinguished and the mattress and clothes got outside'before the. danger was over. Mr .T. Panckhurst was in a bad condition from the smoke when lie was got out of the. room, but soon recovered.

The death took place at Westland Hospital last night of Mr John Scott, a former well-known resident of Ross, where ho followed mining' pursuits in his earlier days. In the course ol a discussion last evening at the special meeting of the Grey Hospital Board, Mr G. R. Marker referred to the question of obtaining a water supply for the Hospital iroin an artesian source. He mentioned a generous offer had been made by Air George Davidson, of Hokitika, (who. by the way. has done remarkably fine work in the interests of the 'Westland Hospital) to come here and carry on boring operations, his services promised gratis. They should make another elfort in the vicinity of their boiler shed, and if they spent L‘lo or €ls it would he worth it to test the matter. The Foundry had secured a serviceable supply. The Chairman (Mr J. AY. Hannan’i mentioned that two bores had already been tried, one on tlie higher and the other on the lower level, and neither gave any result, whilst geological opinion obtained indicated that the formation was unfavourable, while the supply available from a bore recently put down near Griffon's Hill in town had been very limited. Air AleTaggart thought it might he worth while to accept the offer of Air Davidson, and Air llrislane opined that another attempt to secure water would he advisable. Mr Marker said the Board -’ould need to procure the plant. AL -JclaggaiT said that useful device would, doubtless, he obtainable, from Alt' AVarhurton, the noted boring specialist. lhe Board finally agreed unanimously to leave the matter in the hands of All Marker.
