VAIVIIE OF A FIST. LONDON, Sept. 7. In Nenagh, Co. Tipperarv. on .Monday Air M. R. Jleffern an, the farmers’ candidate, was surrounded by a gang ol roughs whose leader attacked him. Despite 11io tact that lie was wearing a heavy overcoat, Air Jlcffernaii’s straight left caught bis assailant on the nose and a light to the jaw sent the man sprawling. Blood was flowing from Air Hefi’ernan’s ear when be got to the platform, but bis pugilistic powers had evidently impressed the opposition, for lie was allowed to make bis speech in peace.
ACTRESS ELECTROCUTED. PARTS, Sept. 7
.Mile. Cosettc Goillard, an actress, aged 22, who is filling a minor role in Hie Folies liergere revue, lias died by electrocution, after receiving a shook J ll the stage from a stray wire.
When leaving the stage, where she bad appeared in a tableau wearing a silver lame dress, she accidentally touched the wire of a light illuminating the scenery. She recevicd a shock of 200 volts, but after steadying herself for a few minutes and taking a restorative she asked to be driven home.
During the night she became very ill mil was removed to hospital, whore ■ lie died.

Five men were bolding a business conference in the office of a lawyer on the fitb storey of building adjoining the Harvard Club to-day when one of them drew a pistol and started shooting.
Two lawyers jumped from the win-j dow to avoid the bullets. One was in- j stantly killed on the pavement and the other is not expected to recover. | Another man collapsed in bis chair, with two bullet wounds in bis chest, while a fourth staggered to the lift, in the door of which be fell dead. j The fifth man, who is alleged by the police to have fired the shots, is missing. Tt is believed that n dispute arose over certain property. SAYING ‘SANPENCE,’ LONDON. Sept. 7. A decision of interest to motorists was given by Bailie Donald Alacdonald at Inverness Police Court yesterday. the point at issue being whether a motorist who refused to pay a parking foe of 6d. could be prosecuted on a charge of having left bis car in the street for unnecessarily long time.
Bailie Macdonald upheld the objection raised and ilie charge was abandoned.
In giving judgment the bailie said that since the parking stance in the street had been set aside by the corporation 1200 motorists had paid the fee of Gd each. The first objector was
