MELBOURNE CUP RAO

By Telegraph—l'cr l’rcss Association. AIELBOURNE, Nov. 1. Rain fell overnight and early this morning, hut it was line, though dull when the races began. 'I here was an enormous attendance, including several New Zealanders. Seven ox-New Zealand trainers were represented in the Cup field. After being fourth in the early stages of the hurdle races, Deauville took the lead at the last hurdle and won nicely, It has now won its last three races. The time was a race record. F. Leonard rode the winner.

Fujisan scared a brilliant victory in the llighweight. U won the same race last vear and its ruler 3. Pike, has won this race for three successive years.

Maid of Nook finished brilliantly and won the Nursery narrowly. She cost eighty guineas as a yearling and has a record of two wins and a second in four starts, having won £ISOO in stakes. (Tan Robert, alter being fifth early led into the straight in the Steeples ami scored a popular victory. 11c was ridden by the veteran, It. Moon, and trained hv Tint Scobie. Navargo fell and was fatally injured. lleatt Mania was a 1 >ng "ay hack in the opening stages in the Pm A can Stakes, hut finished with a great hurst, and won brilliantly, ridden by Frank Dempsey.

Twenty-six .started. Affirm took charge scon after entering the straight and led past the stand from Sacedon, Rawhetu. Silvias, Trivalve. Merry Mint anil Star TVOr, with Valaisiaii, who began badly, last. On leaving the straight, Affirm was still in command, and nine furlongs from home was a length in front, followed by Rawhetu, I then Piastoon, Sacedon, A Terry Alint. Silvias, Star D’Or and Pilliewinkie. Son o’ Aline was now last. Star l)'0r moved up fast near the mile and six furlojngs post and was .second to Affirm. Others prominent included Silvias, Rawhetu, Trivalve, Sacedon and Alurillo, while Bioolour was moving up, and Son o’ Aline was still last. Affirm led at the turn and was first into the straight, leading Silvias. Bicolour. Trivalve and Textile in that order. Silvius was in front at the distance, but Trivalve finished best, and won by a length. Son o’ Aline, who finished with a remarkable run was a length and a quarter away third. Tt was an exciting race. Silvias looked a winner at the distance. Trivalve was sixth at the mile, but finish-

oil best and scored brilliantly. Son o’ Aline finished with a phenomenal run after being last at the home run. Alerry Alint showed up for a long way. but Pilliewinkie was never dangerous. The. winner and rider were aceai-J a remarkable ovation, which lasted several minutes. Rider R. Lewis had his fourth victory for the race, and it was Trainer Seobie’s fourth win also. Trivalve is the first horse to win the Derhy-Cup double since Patrohas won in 1915. Lewis stated that lie had a good ride, and was never further back than tenth, followed by Reed on Silvios. He considers Trivalve won localise it has two strains of Musket blood against Silvias’ one.

Trivalve as bred by its owner, E D. Clarke, who is at present on a fishing excursion in New Zealand.

Lewis is 49 years old and Scobie 07 years. They were congratulated by the Governor-General. Ashley Reed, rider of Silvias in the Cup. stated that he thought Silvias was a certainty at the turn, but the horse died on the run home.
