HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE,

RIO DE .JANEIRO, Oct. 25.

The Italian liner “Principesse Alafalda,” of Genoa, en route here, foundered 130 miles south-east of Bahia, presumably with a large loss of life. The ship* carried 1600 passengers, many being emigrants tor tbe Ai-

gentine. Hundreds of people were rescued by four ships which responded to calls for aid.

The French vessel “Formosc” saved more than seven hundred, according to some reports, hut others later indicate that only 720 of the liner’s passengers had been accounted for last night. The Brazilian Minister of the Navy has ordered a cruiser to proceed to the scene. It is believed the Principesse Alafalda sank after striking a reef. OYER 700 AITSSTNG. RIO 1)E JANEIRO. Oct. 20. Out of 720 saved from the Prmcipesso Mufalda, the French steamer Formose rescued 120. The British steamer Empire At a r saved two hundred. The German ship Athena saved four hundred. The British steamer Radioleine assisted, hut it is unknown whether slio rescued any.

(Received this dav at 0.30 a.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO. Oct. 20. Advices received here this morning indicate almost all the passengers and crew of the Principessa Mafalda were saved. Many of tho shipwrecked reached Bahia by lifeboats. Ten steamboats were standing by when the boilers exploded. MONTEVIDEO, Oct. 26. Only thirty-four of twelve hundred one! fifty-eight persons aboard the Principessa Mafalda were missing late today, according to a message received by the local agents of the ship.
