THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Supply and Demand, The law cf supply and demand, like all natufftl laws, is just and equitable. Under it the benefit comes duly when it is earned. Aliy mall-made institution that sets itself up to oppose this law is fore-doomed to ultimate failure. Such an institution is the Arbitration Court of New Zealand. When will we learn our lesson ? Surely that- severe rap over the knuckles following on our attempt to oppose the working of this law of supply and demand in the Dairy Control debacle was sufficient to open our eyes. I quote the following from W. W. Weddol and Company’s annual review, the most authoritative in the produce business: “Ultimately tbe only factor that governs a free market like that for butter and cheese is tbe law of supply and demand. Any other influence can have only a temporary effect.” And I say the influence of tbe Arbitration Court can have only a temporary effect. But meanwhile it is sowing a crop of disaster that will have to he harvested, that is now being harvested—witness our unemployment. —Press Correspondent.
