WESTLAND COMPETITIONS SOCIETY

TUESDAY, OCTOBER LBth

The annual meeting of the Society was held at the County Chambers last evening at ~Do o clock. There were present:—Mr D. Evans ([’resident) Revs. G. Knowles-Smith, and J. \V Hayward, Messrs l.ynn, Stapleton Partridge. Richards, Sweney, Conning, and Morris (lion. see.). The minutes of the previous meet in were confirmed. The Secretary read a short report referring to the successful season past, while the balance sheet disclosed

credit balance of Co Bis 3d for tbe past year, which added to tbe credit brought forward from the opening year, gave the Society a total credit balance of Co I Is 3d.—Received. The President moved the adaption of the report and balance sheet, and congratulated tiie Society on a year of useful work. The Competitions had improved greatly in quality and it Was evident was bringing out much latent talent. lie was glad to see the competitors were enjoying the work and readily ottering to come forward at entertainments to assist in giviu pleasure to the inmates of the local institutions. The Society was indebted to the good work performed by Mr Morris (Secretary) and Mr Conning (Treasurer!, both of whom had the interests of, the Society very much at heart. The Chairman thanked the members of the Committee and all coworkers for the spirited co-operation which resulted in so pleasant a record being sot up. Rev. Knowles Smith in seconding the motion said the financial position was satisfactory. ’The Society had given the public excellent value for a very small charge, and all had every reason to he satisfied wtih the work carried out and the results achieved. Morris; Treasurer and Assistant Secretary: Mr J. Conning; Committee. Messrs Partridge, R. l.ynn. \Y. E. Richards. 11. Sweney, Stapleton. 11. 0. Coles, and IT. M. Coulson. Official accompaniste, Miss Da Iv. A.T.C.L. GENERAL.

A discussion ensued regarding dates and nidges tor next session. -Mr Partridge made a strong plea in tavour of holding the Competitions during the term holidays so as not. to interfere with the school attendance. This was agreed to. The matter of date on which to work as regards selection ol dates, was left to the Chairman to ascertain (Ireymouth dates. The question was adjourned accordingly lor the time being.

Rev. Hayward moved that three guineas be voted to the Bind for tbe wireless for tbe Mental Hospital. Mr Partridge seconded. Carried. The Chairman presented tbe t hoir Shield won by All Saints’ ( boil* to Mr \Y. E. Richards on h.-half of the Choir, in doing so, Mr Evans congratulated the Choir on its initial ellort in winning so line a trophy." It: was expected that next \aor the competition for the handsome shield would he more pronounced and the Choir would have to look to it-: laurels to hold the 1 ropliy.

Mr Richards, as a member of tlm Church Committee, In accepting the shield, thanked the Society for so fine a trophy which was well worth winning. He hoped next year the choir would ho able to retain the trophy against all competitors. Rev. Hayward joined in congratulating the Choir on its success, and explained the difficulty in the way of the Presbyterian Choir competing this year hut with the conditions altered on next oe.aesion the position would he altered. The meeting concluded at 8.15 p.m.
