HORSE TRAINER INJURED
HASTINGS, Oct. 14
Yesterday morning Harry Hickey, a veteran horse trainer, was riding Admiral Codrington on the Hastings racecourse when, in endeavouring to pull tho horse up, the hit broke. Hickey was thrown heavily to the ground. He attended to his duties during the day, hut took a had turn last evening, and was ordered to the hospital, suffering from concussion. COLLISION WITH HORSE. WANGANUI, Oct. 13. While proceeding on a motor cycle to a dance at Kaitokc, three miles from Wanganui on the Muint South Road, Maurice Armstrong, aged nineteen, employed as a boilermaker at the East Town railway workshops, collided with a straying horse half a mile from the town bridge. He sustained severe spinal injuries, and was taken to the hospital. LEO FRACTURED. AUCKLAND. Oct. 14. Captain Collins, aged forty, a former member of the Royal Air force, who has not boon long in New Zealand, was admitted to the hospital’ to-day with a fractured leg and abrasions as tbe result of bis motor cycle colliding with a motor car in K’nybcr Pass Road. The cycle was partially wrecked. The car was not damaged. Captain Collins resides at Papakura. JT.Af.S. DITNEDTN. AUCKLAND. Oct, 14. The cruiser Dunedin will leave for lAkaroa at 9.30 o’clock to-morrow morning to continue her annual tour of the New Zealand ports, rejoining If.M.S. Diomede off Lyttelton Heads on Monday morning. TT.M.S. Dunedin was ordered to come up to Dovonport base in anticipation that hei services might he necessary either at Samoa or Solomon Islands. However, as H.M.S. Adelaide has left Sydney for the Solomons and the sloop Veronica. is already at Suva. it was thought these two vessels would be j capable of handling any crisis which 1 might arise. TT.M.S. Dunedin was 1 ordered to take in provisions and oil ! fuel for a long cruise, but fresh ortiers received within the past day or 1 two made it unnecessary to finalise ! these preparations.

MOTOR CYCLIST HURT. WELLINGTON, Oct. 16. While motsr-evcl ing from Days Bay to ’Wellington, a young man. James Nee Wen, aged 23 years, collided with a motor car, driven by John Rainc, of Wellington, at Howard Point, and received severe injuries to both legs. On Wen’s own admission, he was travelling at 40 miles per hour.
MISSING LAUNCH. AUCKLAND. Oct. 16. The Tutanekai, winch returned to Onelumga on Saturday, found no trace of the launch “Speedwell,” which left Auckland for AVaitnngi. Bay of Islands, on Sepembcr 26tli. Iho solo occupant of the launch was Edwin AValkor, a retired farmer. The- captain of the Tutanekai thinks the launch foundered off the coast between AVlmngnroi and Cape Brett.
OPERATIC SOCIETY. HAAIILTOX, Oct. 16. The Hamilton Amateur Operatic Society, which has had a wonderful fivenight season with its “Tvatinka” production, has donated £IOO to tho Afavor’s fund for the relief of the distress duo to unemployment. EARTHQUAKE SHOCK NEW PLYAIOUTH, Oct. 16. A violent shock of earthquake occurred at one o’clock on Saturday, and it startled the residents of New Plymouth. In numerous cases, crockery and other articles were thrown down from shelves, but no damage of,a serious nature lias been reported. The quake was a. short, sharp jolt, which came unheralded.
WESTPORT CUP FINAL WESTPORT, Oct. 16
The final of the Albion Cap Rugby match was played on Saturday between the Stars (winners of the town sectioni and Mokihinui (winners of the country section). Stars won the game by 8 to 0. AfoNcight, AYoollett, Caldwell, Sherlock, Jones and AlacKcnzic played outstanding games.
