PARLIAMENTARY.

AVELLINGTON, Oct. 15. Speaking on the tariff bill early

this morning, Mr Seclclon congratulated the Government and thanKed them for what they had done for the timher industry. What had been clone would help the industry, the depression in which would not have taken place had what was being done now been done in 1921. The industry had been through a crisis, and it was pleasing to notice the way in which' the employers and employees had got together, to impress upon the Govvernment the seriousness of the position. He hoped the effect of the bill would be that they would never have! to go through such an experience again. He referred to the findings of the Tariff Commission in respect to timber, and said the Commission did

not attribute the depression to lack of organisation in the industry. Ho felt sure if there were short comings, however, that they would lie remedied. The trouble had been due to heavy importations of foreign timber. The efFect of tariff should he to put New Zealand timber on the market as it was as good as Oregon pine. 0.8. timber would now have a chance of going on tbe market and would. be just about saleable. Tbe Government should reap a great deal of profit from the transport of timber over railways. They looked forward with confidence to the result of the tariff, and desired to than the Alinister for what he had done.

In regard to gold dredging machinery, Air Seddon urging the Alinister to calculate his interpretations of what might and what might not be done as soon ns possible, as people in Westland were waiting for this information.
